width of wheels
I have a standard MK2 Escort axle and diff, engine with potentially 160BHP (at the flywheel) going through a (modified) Sierra propshaft...
What would you consider is the largest wheel/tyre combination that could be fitted without over stressing the mechanics? Particularly in terms of
width, moreso than diameter.
At the moment i have 5.5x13" Minilites (IIRC!), but i think they look a bit puny at the back in the arches, so had briefly considered upsizing,
but i remember reading threads about this subject years ago, but typically cannot find them now.

The width of the wheel should be no less that 85% of the tyre width according to tyre guro LJK Setright, so you are looking at a puny 165 tyres!
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

i'd say 7 inch wheels would be ideal. 205/60/13 at the rear and 185/60/13 for the front. Works with my mate's R1 powered Locost anyway.

Generally tyres are the narrow end of the permissible fitment range for a given rim width give better handling. NB handling rather than grip.
Aspect ratio also has an effect on the relation ship between tyre section size, tread width and rim width.
5.5J x13" Minilite is the classic Lotus Seven wheel rim size, but you might want to consider going a little broader on the rear but leaving
the fronts on 5.5" as this should reduced any tendancy to snap oversteer.

Not a bad suggestion alternatively as the op's car is a cec perhaps 195/60 on 6.5" rim might also be in the ball park.
