Lumpy acceleration on Subaru
In Anything section else because this beast would never fit into my Locost, Damn!
I got a 2ltr Subaru engine thats done around 215k miles she's started becoming quite lumpy on acceleration up to about 3k or 4k RPM. Ive heard
that this is fairly common with Subaru's but what do you guys think it is?? I thought it might just be the ht leads breaking up a bit but Ive
got a feeling it might be more costly than that.
Any help or advice would be great before I start pulling the engine apart.
cheers
Derek.

I've hear that Subaru's engine management strategy not being entirely compatible with aftermarket boost controllers causes the powerband
to feel quite lumpy. Instead of a smooth surge of power, it seemed to come in little hits and surges. Could this be it?

There isn't any aftermarket components on the engine so I guess that can't be the problem in my case.
Its a real shame really because the engine has truck loads of torque and sounds sweet.
I was just wondering if it might be the fuel pump, what do you think?

I suppose the best approach (albeit a little costly) would be a rolling road dyno analysis ? Is there one near you?
At least you'll know what's going on

are you saying you have a performance engine thats done 215,000 miles?
Id be happy if it was running at all - let alone lumpy!

I would certainly look at the plug leads first, especially if they have never been replaced....
Dont just build it.....make it!

High mileage on these engines is not uncommon - and they can still be healthy if cared for - but I'd be suspicious if it hasn't had a
decoke? Carbon build up withing the combustion area is not a great issue these days but I bet the stems of the inlet valves will be like toffee apples
if it's not had a refurb - not to mention the seats!

So I'll go for new leads first and if no joy..
....Off with his head !
Steve: I know she's a high miler but still good for 120mph and still very quick off the mark, them Japs know how to put an engine together.
cheers lads,

wow, It was the coils.
so I moved away from the UK, lived in Amsterdam for 3 years then moved to New Zealand. been here 4 years. bought another subaru which after a year has
developed lumpy acceleration. so googling the fault I found my old post from years ago on my last subaru.
