Question for the R1 guys
My gearbox breather has a lot of smoke coming from it. Is this usual?
If not, what is it usually down to? The clutch?
It has been like this since I got it, but abated for a bit until today when I took the car up the lane. It doesn't smell great either.
Engine is a 2000 R1
Thanks
James

Mine does the same thing and no problems so far.
What I do know about R1's is that they like to use oil a bit more than most other bike engines, so keep an eye on the level - top of the sight
glass at tickover is what you want.

Mine is the same, it seems to smoke a bit but I have given it a fair few 'sound drives' and it is still performing faultlessly.
I have fitted a catch tank to see if any oil comes out, but does not seem to. I plan on running it as is, if it goes 'bang' then I will
put in a later spec engine (mine is a 99).
Hope that helps

Righto, I will leave it be for a while. I am pretty sure its oil but I can fit a temporary catch tank to see.
Thanks!

mine is a 98 and also smokes you can smell it on your clothe after a good drive it has a catch tank (alloy bike bottle)but i have just drilled a
15mm hole and attached a rubber hose to the top of the bottle to the underside of the car to direct the fumes underneath so far its a lot better also
never any oil in the bottle.

are you sure it should be at the top at idle?i may be wrong but i thought for baffled sumps it was a 250ml overfil from when the bike engine is cold
and with the level between low/high on the glass sight once idling it will fall
