I bought one recently from an Orion Si, it has no engine number. It's not been ground off or messed with, it's a virgin surface, it's never had one. The only marking is an RQ not even RQA or RQB.

I've since read that in the early days of Zetecs, recon engine's came from Ford without a number.

It makes no difference to us as SVA was years ago, but I wouldn't like to turn up for IVA with an engine with no number.

If you buy one, make sure it has an engine number

As far as I`m aware it`s pre july `92 for a manufacturer`s vehicle, but if there is no exact match in the testing manual for your vehicle then it becomes pre aug `95 that is the cut off date, hence for kits it is the `95 date used? Have a look in the flow charts in the IVA manual, it`s available to download online thru DVLA, Cheers
