This is a good story. It means further millions of our money won't be wasted, AND we won't have compulsory ID cards.

But what is the betting that they still carry on with it being non-compulsory, spend loads of money anyway and have an even more ineffective white elephant on their hands.

What's the betting that they'll be non-compulsory, but life will become difficult without one...

What company will turn away your money because you don't have an ID card? They'll continue to accept other forms of ID as they do now.

Who said anything about companies? I'm thinking of things like "you can't have benefits without one" or "you can't register at a job centre without one" or "You can't apply for a driving licence... etc" and so on. It needn't happen all at once, but in dribs & drabs.

I once had a conversation with a girl who grew up in the former East Germany. She was always told that she didn't have to join the communist party - but if you didn't have a party card you didn't go to school, couldn't get a job, and so on. An extreme example - but in the same vein.

Hmmm - not sure that example is actually that extreme given the current governments record...
