Removing pop rivets

I need to remove some rivets to replace an ally panel. I know the easy way is to drill throw them, but I was thinking about all the bits that gets inside the tubes!!

Is there any other method?

Thanks.

I dont know of any other way

You could always cut the end of the tube drill out all the rivets and shake them out (do not do this)

What about injecting some sealent into the holes to catch the loose rivets inside the box section

Hi,

You can spray cavity wax into the chassis and as it sets it should hold the bits in place, you can get the likes of waxoil in spray cans with a thin application tube like comes with WD40.

You can chisel the heads off and knock the remaining bit into the chassis tube.

I don't like doing it for two reasons; firstly you tend to damage the panel the rivet is holding on, and secondly you put more of the rivet into the tube.

Best method is to drill as you say. When re-fitting, fit all rivets except one (In middle) or two (one either end) of relevant tubes and then inject waxoyl into the chassis tubes to stop them rattling...and protect the tubes. Don't need to fill the tubes.

Reason for fitting most rivets first is so the waxoyl doesn't come flying out all the holes and over your panel.

Spray some waxoyl into the tube via one of the holes.
1. Its tops them rattling about.
2. Its stops any rust developing as the tube is not sealed from the air.

You can use super glue, but you would need a lot, and it wont help protect against rusting.

You know it makes sense.

Drill hole on bottom of tube shake out, weld plug??
Put plastic blanking plug??
I have no problem as I have overbuilt 1.5
" X 1.5" Sch. 14 tubes.
Anyway in the event I need to replace, I will not go thru the hassle.
As said above I´m expecting it to be noisy as hell.

We repanelled a car and drilled all the old rivet heads off and never heard so much as a tinkle from it. Just get on with it and stop procrastinating.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
