I used to go along most of that route back in the late 60s/early 70s. M4 didn't exist between Maidenhead and Tormarton (A46 north of Bath)
You forget how relatively clear the roads really were.

I and my cousin, hitched from London to Fishbourne Wales to Ireland, up to N. Ireland, across and down to London again in the 70's, and I can tell you, it wasn't ever busy. Many, if not most, people didn't have cars in Ireland!

Recently, I was surprised how actually drivable London is nowadays. I expected worse. And that congestion area is actually quite tiny.

re. the vid: I don't understand why the idiot felt he had to blast his horn and flash his lights to let the guy know he wanted to pass. Rude if you ask me, but then you have to go back to what Jag, and other drivers of fancy dancy cars used to be like!

I thought the driving (truck in reading etc..) in the first couple of minutes was a bit of a free-for-all. I live in that area and can testify the aggresive driving style is much the same today.. I guess the X5 wasnt available then....
