Picked up the new project yesterday

Picked up the new project yesterday, no real plans as yet, other than getting the cosmetics up to A1 standard.

It's already been remapped and is running approx 510bhp

Seems nippy enough for now

Anyone had one before? care to tell me about your experiences, not bothered about the cost's though, i know these aren't cheap to run/look after, and i bought the car knowing all about the expense involved

Took a while to narrow down the choices, it was between an e46 m3, m5, RS4, RS6, Evo 8 fqmr340 and type c import scooby.
It was then narrowed down to a 4wd, meaning the BM's went (the wife may drive the car at somepoint and there's loads of hedges near by ) Then after owning a subaru Sti earlier this year, i ruled out both the jap cars on a fact of poor interiors, that left me with 2 or 3 you could say.
Rs4 Avant circa 2000
Rs6 Avant
Rs6 Saloon

I'd always promised myself a V8 powered car, and decided now was the time, so that ruled out the RS4, then some years ago i always wanted an Rs6 Saloon, but could never afford one (they were near on 60k new)

So that more or less made my mind up and started a search for an Rs6 saloon, i must admit i was tempted by a very nice Daytona Grey Avant a few weeks ago, but in the end i stuck with the saloon, and here it is

Considering that as a doner, I assume you are going for the wider chassis.

Really niiiice. Jealous I am.

Good choice Chris. We will have to compare your RS6 against my RS4

I did a lot of miles in one.
And did a lot of modding.
This gave a much better response and a revier engine.

Nice car.

I've had a series of high powered Audis (440BHP S4, 540BHP RS4 etc) so I know a lot of people with RS6.

The common issues are
DRC failure so check that they are not leaking or change to coilovers
Gearbox...common failure on badly remapped cars where the torque isn't controlled correctly and where the gearbox hasn't been mapped with the engine.

There have also been instances of cracked heads as well as turbo failure.

Do you know the history of the car and who did the remap ? Basically if it hasn't been done by Mihnea or Doug at MRC Tuning or ViperBL then it needs sorting. I would take it to Banbury and let the boys at MRC check it over.

MRC have done a manual gearbox conversion on these C5 RS6s as well.

Cheers everyone for the tips

Jeff the map was done by Unit20, only them viperbl and Mrc come recommended on the rs6 forums, the Drc has already been ditched in favour of coilovers as you say one of the most unreliable parts on the car, but i believe Audi has now moved on to v3 and has sorted the issues, although many cars have changed over to coilovers already.

Then there's the gearbox, i did a lot of research on this before i bought a car, it seems there is reasons for the box packing up and some are oil related, so i just made sure i bought one that had been serviced regular (unlike Audi who claim it's sealed for life) No guarantees it'll be fine but from the research it seems most let go below 50k due to a leaking seal and low oil level causing the box to overheat, the selector switch problems are easily sorted with a new sensor.

Other than that, the engine and gearbox were remapped together, i don't think any of reputable companies (listed above) leave the gearbox out, probably just the ill informed generic mapping guys.

Just need some spare time now to get out and about in it, may well have a run down to Brands Hatch tomorrow for the Total Kit Car trackday/show type event.

Well if Grizz and Rich (ViperBL) have sorted it you should be OK. Was it a Unit20 remap (Custom Code) or a ViperBL remap ? I know Grizz is now using Rich rather than the terrible Ciustom Code effort. If it is Custom Code I would spend the money and get Rich or MRC to do it.

I'm at Brands tomorrow in the Phoenix so pop by and say hello.
