1.8 CVH engine CFI type queries

I run a carb'd CVH engine andI am just going through options for my spare CFI engine.

The Haynes manual shows the two types of 1.8 CVH engine having different valve timing.

The Carb is an R2A and CFI R6A type

R2A
Inlet Open 22 BTDC
Inlet Close 54 ABDC so 256 degrees of open
Exhaust Open 64 BBDC
Exhaust Clse 12 ATDC so 256 degrees of open

R6A
Inlet Open 24 BTDC
Inlet Close 116 BTDC = 64 ABDC so 268 degrees of open
Exhaust Open 110 ATDC = 70 BBDC
Exhaust Clse 18 ATDC so 268 degrees of open

So there are an extra 12 degrees on the CFI engine. (Maths being correct).

How this can be when the cams are listed as being the same for both the 1.8 and 1.8i heads?

The recent CFI engine I got was going to be a spare just case I damaged my present engine.

I am wondering the CFI head would work with carbs and if anyone has in fact used the CFI head with any success.
Does anyone with a better knowledge of the two engines could advise?

Are you sure there are 2 1.8 CVH's?, I have a feeling the efi engine was Pinto.

Many moons ago when I was keen I looked for a better cam for the 1.8 CVH ,no one in this country did one,or could machine one. The only possibility I found was a fast road cam for the American 1.9 CVH which I think ,is what the European 1.8 CVH was based on.

Yep two!

Same bottom end but different heads. The CFI seemed to come out in 1992 up to that point it was carbed. The CFI also did not use a distributor but went EDIS.

CFI meaning Central fuel injection like some of the early Escorts only one injector!!

According to this Parkers info the CFI had less power than the carb'd one, and that was breathing through a pitiful 22/23mm Pierburg carb.

It does make you wonder how it produced the same as the 1.8 Pinto that was on bigger weber carbs. seems to suggest the carb was better or that the issue with in the air filter set up?

Rolling Roads tests seem to suggest the 1.8 CVH will provide better from my own experience and another's who has done bike carbs both around 105 to 107 hp.

Yes there were 2 types of 1.8cvh as you say, but there was also a 1.6 cvh CFI unit in a Sierra, are you looking at the figs for that by mistake? Dennis

I dont think so Dennis, it is my supplement section 14 of the manual, I am sure somewhere says it is a hemi head as apposed to lean burn, but not sure now.

I have only just purchased a fuel pump so I can try this engine, running on a make shift cradle, to ensure it still runs.

I have seen some other cars with the later engine in but never got around to asking drivers of details.
