Roller / Tensioner Kit for XE Engine

Can anyone recommend a good source for a roller / tensioner kit for an early XE?

Am I just as well going to my local Vauxhall dealer?

Presume you mean for the timing belt? If so check out your local motor factors for a Gates belt kit, comes complete with everything you need. Would also suggest replacing the water pump whilst doing the job

Yep... already have the Gates belt and a water pump sitting nearby!

Meant to get a new tensioner and roller when I ordered the belt... doh!

Would be worth considering going for Steel Idler pulleys (If you don't have them already) and tensioning the belt off the water pump

The plastic pulleys are the work of the devil and have been known to fall to bits

The Steel Idlers are about £35 each from Autovaux

Steel Idlers, Tensioned off the Water pump...

Hi Perksy

Could you explain a bit more... does this mean doing away with the tensioner?

Yes, if you replace the tensioner with a fixed idler pulley the water pump can be rotated in it's housing to tension the belt, which is the method that several other Vauxhal engines use from the factory.

The big steel tensioner for the early XE is quite expensive (or was when I tried to get one last), though the OEM part was virtually bullet proof. Mine lasted ~130k in my old Astra, though I did repack it with grease a couple of times.

What Mike says above

Also there is a way of modifying the Steel Tensioner so that it can be used as an Idler (save buying another Steel Idler)

But to be honest if i had the choice, i'd rather just go for 2 'proper' Steel idlers

Vauxhall acknowledged the problem with the Plastic Idlers by reviewing the service schedule on the frequency of changing the Timing belt & Tensioners (Down to 4 years)

BUT as a Good Insurance policy i'd go for the Steel ones everytime, I know its more money, but the damage that happens when one of the Plastic ones fail Ain't worth thinking about

I've got myself all confuzzled (it happens easily enough!). So... I need two of these...

... and I don't need one of these because the water pump is being used as the tensioner instead...

I've picked this up wrong... haven't I!?

Can't see the Pictures Mate

I'd recommend getting the Steel Pulleys from Autovaux as they will be the Pukka INA ones

But you need 2 Standard Steel Idler Pulleys

You Don't need the Standard Cam Belt Tensioner as You'll be Tensioning the Belt using the Water pump

Note - One of the New Steel Idler pulleys will be Replacing the Standard fitment Tensioner

Have another look on my photo above and it should be abit clearer

If you get stuck let me know and i'll get the paperwork out from Autovaux for the Part No

Cheers Perksy!

I've changed the pics to links (message below) - hopefully they should work.

It's the early XE engine (round-tooth belt if that makes any difference).

So... I need two of these...

Correct Mate

Just Don't pay QED Prices

Autovaux will sort you out no problem

Also Don't forget that there is a Steel 'Post' that the Pulley sits on that goes between itself and the Block
Make sure you have 2 and also the Thick Washers that go under the heard of the Caphead screws
(Tighten to the specified Torque with some Threadlock)

If you wanted to be real fussy you could replace the caphead screws aswell

If your missing Any Bits Autovaux will be able to help

Torque Settings are Here:
