4age 16v and 20v block.

not sure if this has been asked before but is the block the same for both units (16v and 20v)? If this is the case what about the crank is this the same?

I am looking at building a short block so will be bying new pistons and rods. Just need to know if I have to hold out for the 20v engine or if a 16v short motor would do?

As far as I understand the 16V and 20V are both the same blocks, different internals and head.

The 20V is a better engine out of the box due to its increased power, lighter internals and smooth delivery. The 16V has stronger internals more suitable for forced inductions. I think when running bigger power the common idea is to use 16V internals especially crank due to the heavier more robust construction.

I am sure somebody else will be along to clarify.

Out of interest what are you building? Long term I would like to supercharge my Striker and I think 16V engines are the starting point to do this. If you need a cheap 16V then stick a wanted post up on Driftworks. I have got a few bits from there including a sump and pick up pipe, both of which are actually 16V ones but are the same as my 20V.

The big difference in the 16V is early or late versions, early versions have 3 ribs on the side of the block and were used in the AE 86 body rear wheel drive.

Later 16V engines have more ribs on the block and were FWD, so more problems with water pipes, both will mount to the 5 speed RWD transmission.

The later 16V and 20V have oils squirters for the bottom of the piston and are a little more robust.

The early 16V had a problem of drain back of the oil from the head at high RPM and hard cornering resulting in oil being pushed out the vent into the intake causing great smoke, this can be nullified with a catch tank feeding back to the oilpan.

The AE86 version in North America had a bypass oil cooler which sent access oil to the cooler through a thermostat then back to the oil pan, a T in this line can be used to put the oil from the catch tank back into the pan

I have an early 16V, had 250,000 km, still in good shape.
