Best Standard Production Car for £2 to £3k

Hi All

I wasn't going to compete in the Welsh Championship this year as my Elan 26R is nowhere near ready and life is a bit up and down. However, I had a small bit of good fortune and won the work's draw this week :-)

So, I'm thinking of buying something to compete in the standard production car class, which means fully road legal and no mods apart from safety, and List 1A tyres. I won this class a couple of seasons ago in a Saxo VTR and, as results are based not only on class position but on bonus points for beating class records (quite a few set in the 95BHP Saxo!) something reasonably quick should get me some decent points by the end of the season.

I'm looking to spend around £2k, up to £3 at a push. The rest of my 'winnings' will go towards the 26R.

The car may end up being used for a couple of road rallies and an odd track day too :-)

Initial thoughts are something like a Clio Cup / 172 .

Oh, and the first sprint is a week tomorrow........

Any suggestions?

Ta

Wyn

Clio 172 sounds about right...

Try and find a CatD one..

This? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2741723.htm

Although it might not be fully road legal...

For 3k there is no need to look for a Cat D 172, though there are plenty of written off and badly repaired ones available if you really want one.

A Civic VTi may be worth a look (the proper Hondas, not the Rover 400 with the 1.8 Honda engine). Unfortunately (for you) they hold their value very well, but you get a occasional good deal.

There are a couple of MG ZR's that get pretty good results in local tarmac rallies...

Invest an extra couple of grand and go for the 197, its a superb chassis and very capable.

Sorry Mike, I wasn't saying that in his budget he'd have to look for a Cat D, it's just that I know of a couple of people that have bought cars for so little and then just TD them, they really are a bargain!

Thanks guys

Steve - the first bit of luck I've had in the past shitty 8 months!

sebastiaan - that 205 is hardly standard production! :-)

richardR1 - that 182 looks the ticket! It's a Cat D which doesn't bother me - I'd have to put the rear seats in and remove the strut braces for the sprints and hillclimbs but easy enough to do!

Integra Type R or MX5.

I'm considering doing the same thing and the MX5 is a cracking little car with great handling.
