IVA - Sound test

Hi Guys,

Its IVA season it seems and I want to do everything possible to make sure I pass this time.

Next concern.. Sound test.

I have an MK standard backbox with your standard 50mm tube with holes, surrounded with that hair crap.
I also have a 100cell CAT fitted.

Most of my noise from my ZX12r comes from induction

When reading on what people fail on no one seems to mention the sound being a problem

Should I be worrying or is the level usually achievable? Not sure what else I can do to restrict the sound.

Thanks

A dB kill in the tail pipe, a washer/baffle in the perforated tube or just some wire wool in a wire cage stuffed up the silencer can all help exhaust noise. If you use the wire wool method make sure it's secure; They won't see the funny side of a glowing wire rat flying accros the test centre!

Sound proofing the bonnet or fitting some form of air box will cut the induction noise.

Any exhaust or air-box mod's couldl effect the emmision readings somake the changes before setting the P/Commander if possible.

I had the same issue with sound, I eventually lined the bonnet and side panels with acoustic foam - not cheap but it did the trick and got me through

ETA: Just seen that you are in East Sussex, I am down inbetween Southampton & Portsmouth. If you would like to try you are more than welcome to borrow the foam for your test, I still have it fitted but could take it out

I think I'll buy one of those db killers. Looks simple enough. Should be able to install it after the cat and before the back box.

Does that sound feasible?

Is induction noise a problem then? I thought they tested down by the tail pipe?

They do but it still picks up sme of the indution noise and that might be the difference between a pass and a fail..

as a really rough rule of thumb if the induction is louder than the exhaust you should be ok, (well mine was on bike carbs). also mine was louder with the bonnet on than with it off.

My induction noise is loud but with the bonnet on it should help.

I've got a bonnet scoop so even with foam/soundproofing it will be loud.

I could put on of these in the exhaust system...
