DIY leak down tester

Trying to get to the bottom of low compression on my engine... I have various gauges and bits and bobs lying about so gonna try and make a tester of some sort. First off will a high pressure gauge from an injection fuel regulator work with air instead of liquid?

Yes, found it. some great info on this site!
Have all bits to make something up if i get some pipe, just wondering bout the gauge and if it will work on air not liquid..?
