gearbox and axle advice type 9/english

hey all,
ace forum here much more techy and info based than the vw ones!
im gonna be open and admit im building a vw mk1 caddy pickup.

im being silly and going for rwd...

i already have an engine and ancillaries so planning on sticking with it as its a vw lump so electrics etc are sorted.

im running a bam code 20vt out of a audi tt mapped to 276bhp using a smaller exhaust, downpipe and intercooler than im using so i recon 280 is a good assumption of power...

as it uses leaf springs a 'live' axle will be a simple way of doing things, so thinking mk2 escort english axle (width is aconsideration as i dont want bubble arches, want the surprise of a caddy able to go sideways....)
gearbox wise im told the type 9 has bell housing adapters already available...?

so really is this a good combo? will it handle the power?
planned use is road and occasional track days, with a few 'drift' days to play about.

type9 box looks ideal as it slims down alot so the tunnel cut out can be smaller...

You would get away with putting that sort of power through a type 9 and English axle in a seven or other lightweight car for a while but it would soon destroy both axle and gearbox in a heavier car. An atlas axle from a capri would take it and maybe an Mt 75 box but you would then need an adaptor plate to fit the engine as the bell housings are one piece .

You could get an atlas axle from a capri shortened. Wont be cheap though. Google a firm called FOSTEK for that work. There is no UK dealer doing the gearbox adapter / bellhousing that I know of but would love to know if you find one.
