3sge - mt75 - live axle








My 3sge ( toyota engine ) is mated to an mt75 gearbox in a live axle configuration.
Having excessive vibration of the gearbox and some strange noises when pressing the clutch etc. we had a closer look yesterday
putting the car on a lift.
The propshaft has two univerals joints and is kept in place with a prop shaft bearing. Also a rubber flange ( do not know the english term for it, sorry ) is used to deal with the "play".
The engine is mated to the gearbox with a custom made metal plate ( we call it pasplaat ). I still have to find out
which components are used e.g. friction plate/thrust bearing and so on.

I would be very helpfull to see how other people have mated the Mt 75 to a live axle as I do not know if the configuration that is used in my car is correct. A cv jointed prop shaft might be better ? If there are locostbuilders who have mated a 3sge ( not a beams but second gen as used in a Celica ( ST182 )/Mr2 1990-1994 ) please let me know what friction plate etc. is used..

Being live axle there is movment in the prop that the rubber donut on the end of the gearbox was not meant to take.

Also as the mt75 has no slider like the T9 the prop needs one.

A firm in the uk, Dunning and Fairbank make an of the shelf solution that is nicer than what you have there with no center bearing needed.

I would be VERY intersted in info on your adapter plate and if its of the shelf or home made.

If home made I would question if the first motion shaft is square to the engine and if they have fitted a spigot bearing.

Interesting this. I am fitting an MT75 into my mk2 escort and with that having a live axle i too am looking for a propshaft solution. A sliding section is needed. One possible solution i am looking at is to use the sierra propshaft but turning it around and fitting the gearbox and differential connections on the other ends. This will give a movable section but will require the centre bearing to be retained.

Dunning and Fairbank built a propshaft for me. With a sliding section and two universal joints.
Took them only about 10 days to make and deliver to the Netherlands. Very happy with it !

Hi Jos,

I think I've seen your car once in Ede

Anyway. I'd definitely check if the gearbox shaft is concentric with the crank, the adapter plate might be a bit off. A way to check this might be revving the engine in gear without the prop shaft in.
Eliminating the hardy disk (rubbery thing) is a good idea, hope it works out!

Yes, you have seen it. It is the only yellow one in the road in NL me thinks.

About the vibration ( gear stick ).
It is only vibrating when driving ( in gear ). When pressing the clutch it dissapears within seconds.

That still points towards either side of the gearbox. The propshaft side should be OK when the new one is fitted (which is a nice elegant solution ) The flywheel/clutch side leaves some other options, but since the clutch still disengages it points towards either a failed spigot bearing or a misaligned gearbox (as big_wasa already suggested). The release bearing should not have enough rotational mass to cause any vibrations, it usually starts to rattle.
