Heads up: BBC2 Sunday: How to build a super car

8pm Sunday BBC2, BBC HD

"How the McLaren racing team used Formula One technology to design and construct the MP4-12C road car, whose design features include a carbon-fibre safety cell and the first engine the company has ever built. The programme also reveals how the vehicle's sound was perfected in a recording studio, just like a pop song. Featuring contributions by Ron Dennis, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button."

I watched the one last week about building an Airbus wing - decent programme, unlike some of the cr*p shown these days...

Looking forward to this, just to see my handy work I worked there for 6 months doing the glazing and was well impressed with the building.

Thanks for the heads ups! Watched last weeks programme , the hoist used for the wing that broke down temporarily made my laugh! That would of been a big problem!

I could tell a story about an international airport brought almost to a halt because a fire tender was up on the lifts in the motor pool when the lift was condemned by an insurance inspector.. Without they extra fire tender they had to reduce the category of aircraft the airport could accept.

.......I remember many years ago watching a similar program when they were building (I think) the Boeing 777. They did a destruction test on the main wing where basically they just loaded up the wing until it gave way.

I never realised an aircraft wing could bend so far, with the wingtips up way beyond the top of the fuselage before it gave up the ghost with an almighty bang. I think it reached something like 150% of the target fail figure before doing so though, quite gratifying really and all fascinating stuff.

God I must get out more.......

I was talking to an airline pilot many years ago, shortly after my first-ever flight when barely a teenager... I made a comment about the way the wing tips flap up and down... his reply was "they're meant to do that, otherwise the wings snap off!"

Accurate, but not necessarily reassuring.

Definitely do it! Two of my mates are on placement there at the moment as test engineers and they're loving it (despite regular 7 day weeks and 12 hour+ days).

I was quite disappointed that they completely missed out the design engineering stage, the most involved part of the process!

He used to be my cousin's husband... they're now divorced! The family connection got me an in-flight look in the cockpit, which was an amazing treat for a kid.

Not far wrong, not far wrong at all...

Anyway - back to the plot - I wonder if I can scrape together £175,000+ to buy one of those cars...
...on second thoughts I don't think I'll bother, I'm too impatient to wait 2.5 years!

The program was OK until they started explaining the engine design ---- who ever wrote the voice over script hadn't much idea about engines.

Full marks to Mclaren big gamble but Ferrari watch out they are out classed.

For what you get they look cheap.... the finish on those cars looked fantastic.

That was a massive loom, I,m surprised these days that you cannot just run a few fat feeds around the car and use CAN to tell boxes at each end what to do.. save a few pounds in weight.

Laughed at Ron Dennis's comment, coming second is just the first loser cannot argue with that.

Good program

Of course McLaren are getting used to coming second in F1 maybe thats why Dennis is back in the factory.
