Steering column UJ problems

When I bought the car as part finished it had a Sierra column mated via tube to a solid shaft with UJ at the rack end. After a while I noticed a small amount of play in the UJ. I got another to weld on to the shaft, welded with the UJ immersed in water, end result is hardly any different with a small amount of play in the UJ. Is this common? will it fail an MOT? or should I stick with the soggy sierra version?

Rally Design sell a splined shaft that can be extended and bolt on U/Js for both the rack and upper column connections
