Weird rear axle oil leak

I took the propshaft off to change the UJ and when I undid the 4 bolts on the rear flange oil poured out from inside the cavity between the nose of the diff and the UJ plate. It is an escort axle, The nut on the nose of the diff is not very tight. I don't have an Escort manual but the Cortina one goes into detail about the torque wrench setting and crushing a collapsible spacer.
The only oil seal I know of is outside on the nose of the diff and not leaking, any suggestions how to sort out the leak? how tight to do the nut on the drive shaft? Anyone got the relevant Haynes pages they would send me?

Oil running up through the splines is a common problem. If you take the nut off, mark where it was with Tippex and count how many turns so it goes back in the same place. I took the flange off and refitted with hylomar on the splines.
