Westfield possible ringer

A Westfield or may be not!

I did a registration number check and it shows a Ford Cortina 1982.

Red Westfield, not caterham Tiger Locost or Robin hood race car, Red Sports Car! | eBay

Just never registered properly quite common in the days before before SVA/IVA, it should have been sorted out at the amnesty before SVA was introduced, not sure what the situation is now DVLA may may require either SVA or worse case IVA.

If that is the case it really needs sorting out worst case you have an accident in the vehicle and it appears to be a 1982 ford cortina yellow on the log book but is in fact a Westfield sports car red what insurance company would pay up!

Aside from all the foregoing potential probs re incorrect registration etc., I reckon there are other dubious signs.

Pls correct me if I'm wrong. From pics, those upper wishbones appear to be Cortina originals. Don't think Westfield ever used the Locust approach. And as for that rear end g/f panel!! Never produced by Westfield AFAIR!!

Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuf. The back end is shocking. The only thing that looks west field is the nose cone.

I suppose I have gained a certain amount of knowledge with regards kits cars and can spot the dubious ones but some poor unsuspecting individual may come un stuck purchasing something like this potentially losing hundreds of pounds and ending up on the wrong side of the law.

This vehicle is incorrectly registered...

A ‘Ringer’ is a stolen vehicle with its identification numbers replaced by a set from another identical written-off model and will be supplied with bogus documentation.

This vehicle is not only incorrectly registered, it is being advertised and sold as a Westfield, which it most certainly is not!
Somebody could end up with a very costly mistake here. And how would a purchaser get a refund, as in the ad the seller says he is off travelling.

Regards
Jon

I was one of those unlucky buggers to of been in the potential buyers situation! I purchased unknown to me a locost dutton special! After a couple of years messing around and building up my knowledge of kit cars it then became all apparent that i also had a ringer! Now i'm in the situation where the car is back down to a bare chassis having lots of re-work done because of crap workmanship so that i can have it put through iva and have it fully road legal and correctly registered. I had no support from the bloke i bought it from who just said 'thats how i bought it' so i was left to pick up all the pieces. Eventually it turns out it was a ron champion chassis with mainly cortina donar parts. All in all it cost me a small fortune and no doubt it still will!

As for the dodgy v5 i've ended up having to purchase another unregistered chassis so i get that scraped along with the v5, this was the only way around the situation.

Buyers beware there are some corrupt barstewards out there!

It looks a bit locusty. The chassis looks similar to mine. And the self tapping screws in the scuttle make me think wooden firewall/bulkhead. There doesn't seem to be many rivits on the side panels either. No pictures of the engine either. Strange......

Interesting:

mycarcheck.com has it as a "Ford Cortina Gl (Sports)" - don't think"Sports" was an actual Cortina model, so it could be one of those DVLA cockup things where they kept the original ID but updated the description (a bit)

askmid.com have it insured as a WESTFIELD SEI, which is presumably what he's declared to the insurance company

the seller has 0 feedback on eBay

and from the pictures only the grill and nose have been near a Westfield factory

I've just told him about the mycarcheck and asked him what it says on the V5C.

... and just seen on Pistonheads "Sorry - this item is no longer available IT WAS SOLD VIA PISTONHEADS! "

I have asked if he can take some photographs with the bonnet off and he had said he will take some and post tommorrow.
I have also realised that it is quite close to me, so may go and have a closer look. Just out of curiosity.

Will be interesting to see what it really is?
I just hope some newbie does not buy this for his first kitcar as it will probably and up in a right
messy situation and probably end up leaving a bitter taste in their mouths.
Don’t get me wrong I would be all for recycling a V5 building a Westfield on a Westfield V5 or a Locost on a Locost V5 not entirely ethical but since the introduction of the IVA and the additional cost it makes more and more sense.

Keep away, all sorts of problems including NPR checks and duff insurance.

DVLA are cracking down on this now, its common on Jago's and they are keeping an eye out and these things are only good for spares, or, IVA!

Suprisingly (not!) no reply to my quesion on ebay.

He obviously can't make his mind what it is:

eBay: Red Westfield, not caterham Tiger Locost or Robin hood race car, Red Sports Car!
Pistonheads: Westfield / Locust 7
Gumtree: westfield / locost 7

Hmm, it's an odd one alright.

Don't always go by dvla checks. They've identified mine as an Escort at times but mostly Locost 7.

The Escort bit comes about because I was given the number plate of the donor by the DVLA examiner before registration.

At beginning of this month I had problems with the insurance company till they re-entered the details in their system.
