AB Performance Paddle Shift Fitting

How does the AB Performance paddle shift fit to the car, does it clamp onto the steering column or need connecting to the chassis somehow? I have a MegaBlade with a "race" steering column which is basically a small diameter tube splined at both ends to fit the wheel and UJ - not the Sierra column. Car won't need an IVA so not bothered about any regulations that implies.

Indeed, he'll have the answers but is also a busy man and I'm more deciding which direction I go in than about to place an order. I know a few guys on here have fitted them so hoped one might be able to answer straight off.

you shouldnt worry just give me a ring, I am used to working with the phone clamped to my ear - I perfected the art to prove to my missus she was wrong about mens ability to multi task
The paddles sit on a slider tube that fits over a turned down sierra column, however when we fit them to westfields we make an adaptor specifically to fit the westy column. Its quite simple and works well, give me a call if you need more info

Hi Nick,

Sorry im a little late getting to the thread, im not actually sure of the difference between the Sierra and Race column, but was a very fine tube, and i had a sleeve it over with a piece of larger diameter tubing, and the lengthen the column itself although i cant remember if i did that for comfort or because i had to..

is it like this?



What is your plan for the other end? down at the engine?




I can take some other pic for you tomorrow when the steering wheel off?

The Westfield race steering column is as you describe, a piece of CDS tube. It's normally held in place by standalone brackets, top and bottom. The column then runs in nylon-lined rubber bushes within the brackets, all simple stuff.

I'm sure Andy will sort something nice out if you have the same thing. I simply welded a vertical plate to the end of the top bush and attached the AB assembly on rose joints secured to the aforementioned plate with bolts. Adjustable and secure.

I found I wanted a bit more rigidity (the top bush is only held by the dashboard 'hoop', so I welded a light tube from that down to the chassis rail.

Andy loves his cables, but don't worry if you think you might prefer a rod linkage to the existing Westfield bellcrank from the paddle, the latter works wonderfully too.

Thanks Benzo and MC Mayhem, between the two of you you've answered everything I need to know. I'm planning on Andy building an exhaust for me so will get him to do this at the same time, was trying to work out if this is something I could bolt on myself soon ish or needed some fabrication. So it's off the immediate work list and onto the "pay Andy to do list"

get andy to make you up one of the adapters that simply bolts onto the sump that holds the cable in place for the gear change at the engine end too Nick - Much better to have the cable clamped to the engine rather than the car..

ps - when are you getting that thing out ! fair play to you for having the patience

Ha ha, have you heard of Saint Nick? Went through a period of two months in the winter when I didn't touch it, now back on it but at about 2 hours a week, work & family mate... It looks like a car now, just all the small finishing jobs left on it. But....

Having seen the cars running at Silverstone a few weeks back I'm now seriously considering switching from the 919 to a 1000cc motor before I spend money on having Andy make an exhaust and airbox for it, things that would just get removed when I do eventually switch. The Blade motor I have doesn't owe me much as I stand and can probably get back what it cost me. Would mean the car takes even longer to build though....

stick the 1000cc motor in now - you know it makes sense :-)

even if it means taking the rest of this year out too - at least when you hit the grid you will have the mumbo... and will make your car good for the next few years.. the new blades seem more reliable (gearbox) too.. not to mention ~50 ponies more !!

there is a good market over here for the 919s anyway - If you want to sell it let me know and i will socialise it with the guys

ha - yes S2000 westy was so last year !! i need to update my profile....

I do indeed have a Jedi now - fingers crossed i might get it out for its first race next wk end... no time for practice/testing... so will be entertaining !!

Was thinking ZX10R would be an option, seems to fit a bit better from what I can tell. Off to discuss with Andy now if I can get hold of him. Thanks for help with the 919 if it does come out, also have Al Boulton's spare 893 sitting in the garage too. Combined they should cover the cost of a ZX10R so cost neutral if I forget about a new sump, power commander, etc. Man maths, gotta love it.
