What do you think this Lotus Elans Worth.

I would be interested to understand what you guys think this Lotus Elans worth. I appreciate its difficult to tell without viewing. It belonged to the late father of some good friends who are trying to get a feel of its genuine value for insurance purposes.

Conditionwise its been remarkably well looked after by the same owner for at least 35 years. Underneath all the metalwork looks very solid. The interiors complete and only needs new carpet (whats there's faded) and the dash veneer sorting to get it back to original.

The engine hasn't been run for maybe 5 years, the distributors not fitted. The cars done about 80k miles.

In a nutshell, its a 100% complete, solid tidy Elan that needs very little doing to it to get it back on the road (or roadside waiting for recovery if it lives up to its lot of trouble usually serious lotus name). I only wish the cars that I look at to restore are as good as this Elan looks.

What do think its worth

Had a look at the price guide in an issue of "Thoroughbred and CLassic Cars" Magazine

Value seems to vary a bit depending on what model it is.

if its a Sprint Coupe (71-73), Januarys guide says:
Concours/dealer = 20 000
Private sale mint = 17 500,
good = 10 000,
poor = 6 000

Quite a wide range then so not much help?

Cheers

You can do it quickly. You can do it cheap. You can do it right. – Pick any two.

Sprints were not on stromberg carbs, and had a black cambox with ribbed top and big valve stamped on it.

Ask Paul Matty. Based in Bromsgrove. He will give you a full professional valuation for a charitable donation.

You won't get better than that I suspect.

A chap I worked with had one of those with the knock on wheels and it used to loosen the nearside rear wheel as regular as clockwork. I'd do the work as necessary to get it on the road then ask at least £12,000 for it if it's as tidy as you say.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
