MK Indy R GSXR build day 1!

Here's my first post on here, I picked up my MK Indy R kit yesterday with a K3 GSXR 1000 engine. Let the build commence!

I'll probably just spend today familiarising myself with everything but first question:

What is peoples preference for lubing the polybushes? Silicone grease, or alternatively I've heard Castrol red rubber can be good?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new purchase and choice of engine Whichever grease you end up using, make sure to apply plenty of it. Fit the PU bushes to the wishbones and pack the space between the bushes with grease before inserting the crush tube.

ETA - We used copperslip on ours

Thanks Phil! What did you use, and have you had any suspension squeaking or does it work well? My preference is to get all things right from the start.

We used copperslip grease when building our MK in 2004. The suspension doesn't squeak and we've never needed to regrease them, so I guess it's worked ok......

I used silicone grease and they squeaked lots so I would try copperslip or moly grease.

I used red rubber grease, I would have thought copper slip was a bit too abrasive but I guess if if works on yours then must be ok?

The bushes are made of PU, not rubber......

Hang on, are you meant to grease the bushes?

Is that why my car squeeches with suspension travel?

I did not realise that, and assumed the squeeching would go after use.

Hi Matt,

Yes I'm afraid so! The main options are silicon grease or copper slip, although I'm going for red rubber grease as this is intended for plastic/rubber/composite materials I believe.

Not that I know what I'm doing and seasoned builders may tell you different, but I'm following Lee's advise from his blog: http://l5w-mk-indy-zetec.blogspot.co.uk/

If you see this Lee it would be helpful to know how you're getting on with the red rubber!!

Thanks, it also looks like i made the crush tubes flush with the bushes, so the bushes are pushed up against the bracket.

Looks like I'm going to have a day of fixing this issue.

I've recently discovered PTFE spray for bushes. Mine is branded 'Volvo' and was supplied with my dads old V70 for fixing squeaky hinges I believe. It's amazing, spray it in the general direction of the bush and any squeaks disappear! Don't know how long it lasts (my car doesnt see much mileage) but worth a try before dismantling suspension.

Hi

Whilst sorting the bushing problems out it's worth taking the time effort to see if you have 12mm Bolts with 1/2" bushing. On the ones i have had in the workshop this results in over 1Deg of camber change in the bushing free play. Easier to sort out now than when build is finished or near complete.

Wouldn't 1/2" bolts, as they have don't have the 8.8 markings of a metric bolt be an IVA failure, I thought that is why manufacturers use them and they are replaced once IVA is gained. 1/2" bolts are readily available

I used Copper slip on mine, a nice liberal coating especially prior to the crush tube going in.

Hi

No the problem is that the chassis brackets have 12mm holes and the suspension bushes / crush tubes have 1/2" bore. If the OP is renewing his crush tubes for some the correct length he can also take care of the bore problem also at the same time.

Hi James,

Sorry for the slow reply, I didn't get an email to say there have been replies to this thread in a while! I'm getting no where fast to be honest, I'm still waiting for some parts from MK before I can progress. All the wishbones/shocks are fitted, but I haven't got around to putting it on the blog yet. I wanted to wait until I'd achieved a bit more. Next job is brake/fuel lines but I need to cut out the reverse gear section of the floor panel first. However I'm waiting on my reverse gear!

Fingers crossed it'll arrive tomorrow and I can re-commence the build.

I've just updated my build diary with the first few bits, I'll be doing more work this weekend and haven't taken the photos off my camera yet from last weekend either. So in about a week or so you'll have side panels, steering and brakes all up on the blog!
