Tig welding experts!! Advice wanted!

As part of my rebuild I want to close a few holes I've drilled in the chassis that I don't need or ones that were mistakes... I was wondering how hard it would be to tig weld over a 4mm hole in the box section? I was hoping to get away with just closing the hole over with filler rod, rather than plonking something in the hole and welding it in, can it be done? I'm fairly new to tig, I did a bit in college 5 years ago but I've got a new Xmas present to try!

Probably quicker with a mig.

I've filled a good few holes in chassis and sheet steel with the mig.

Even some up to 1/2" diameter - You can just about weld thin air with a mig with a bit of practice.

Tig would certainly be fine for filling in 4mm holes in tube.

Doddle, practice on a bit of scrap, but it's easy.

I've only got access to a tig welder! Do I start the puddle a small distance from the hole and kind of weld in a line over the hole and then grind the weld back flush?

Assuming 1.5 mm wall, and that you have slope in / ramp up (or whatever your machine calls it)

set start amps to 10
set time to 3 seconds

set main amps to 50

set finish amps to 10
set time to 1 second

With a torch angle of 90 deg start on the edge of the hole.
As the amps build and the edge starts to melt add filler rod and move around the edge of the hole and
finnish in the middle.
Try to add the last blob (technical term) of filler as it slopes down to prevent a pin hole. (fish eye)

Drill a few holes in a bit of scrap box or plate and have a practice first.

Hope this helps.
