Camshaft machining

I have a k series vvc exhaust camshaft that I wish to machine shorter and make the hole in the vvc end bigger to fit a dizzy spigot. (fitting a pair into a 1.4 k series common mod)
I could this be done as I have been told that the camshaft will of been hardened and is very hard.

If it's a common modification then it sounds like it should be possible!

The camshaft will certainly be surface hardened, but that doesn't mean you can't machine it with the right tools. A titanium nitride tipped cutting bit should do it, just take small cuts, use lots of coolant and don't let it get hot while you are turning it down.
