X flow query

First of all I'm sorry if this is a silly question......this is all a little new to me.

Basically I have a Locost 7 running a 1300 xflow. I'm looking at tuning options and am firstly considering swapping to a 1600xflow. My question is, is it a direct replacement for the 1300.....no alterations to engine mounts or anything just a straight swap?

Secondly what do you guys consider to be the best motorbike carbs for these engines?

Thanks in advance

James

It is a straight swap and will bolt up the same as the 1300. The 1600 is about 15mm higher above the crank centre, though so you'll need to check you have room under the bonnet. The standard sump is deeper too so you'll need to check ground clearance. The ancillaries can be swapped between the engines but whether there are any issues here will depend on your set up.

No problem. Welcome to the forum.

Don't simply bolt a 1300 sump onto a 1600. The crank webs and possibly the big end bolts can catch in some cases. A little adjustment with a suitable hammer and some heat will sort but if you are modifying a sump you might as well start with the 1600. Don't ask me how I found out.

Crossflow pistons are the same bore so fitting 1300 pistons to a 1600 gives increased compression ratio

Thanks for all the details guys.

I don't suppose the pinto engine is also a direct replacement is it?

Can't seem to find a 1600xflow engine.

The pinto will bolt to the same gearbox but its not a straight swap. It is a much taller and heavier engine and the exhaust is on the opposite side. A Zetec would be a better upgrade as that will also bolt to the same gearbox is more powerful and has the exhaust on the same side but it is also not a straight swap.

Thanks David....i thought that was the case.

Can i ask....is the 1.6 a big improvement power wise compared to a 1.3?

It depends on the state of tune of each engine. In my case I changed from standard 1300 to tuned 1660 (75%+ increase in bhp) and it changed the nature of the car. It is now much faster and more aggressive, but bites back a bit if I'm clumsy on the throttle. The 1300 was very forgiving and easier to throw about.

ZX6r bike carbs for the 1.6 x-flow seem to be the most popular, i think the Thundercat 600cc ones can be picked up a bit cheaper though,
talk to Bogg Brothers as they are the font of all knowledge on this.
cheers Paul

I have R1 carbs on my 1660 Flow. Runs sweet as a nut, giving about 110bhp at the wheels but its the sound that makes it a great engine....

Engine will be for sale but not until I have installed my Zetec, which might be some time yet....

Afaik R1 carbs seem to be used more on Pintos than x-flow, but if it works dont fix it

Most bike carbs will work perfectly on most engines as long as they are properly setup by someone that knows what they are doing. I've seen 6r carbs on pintos running very well. If they are setup by guesswork then any type of carbs will be unsuitable.
