Cracking machine!

Shame he kept referring to it as a back passage though.

Don't really get the point of that.

The caterham looked effortless round corners.

That "range rover" was all over the place. Only kept up because its 500bhp on the straight line. Tyre squealing etc.

Didn't hear the caterham squealing didn't seem that he was really pushing it. Then again it wouldn't be entertaining to some if the caterham wiped the floor with the range rover.

£155k highly modified 4x4 vs off-the-shelf £15k caterham

Great comparison, not.

I agree, 155k would get you a lot of stuff that is capable of keeping up with a Caterham. The fact it's a 4x4 is interesting though. It reminds me a bit of that old Top Gear episode, I think they challenged a Skoda Yeti against a Ferrari, at Donnington. (Un)fortunately, it was when Donnington was in pieces so while the Yeti could only get to 70 ish, it didn't have to slow down for the potholes and segments of missing track.

Take it for the entertainment it's meant to be - it's well filmed, the drivers are having fun and the vehicles are interesting.

Cost aside, the comparison between a real lightweight car and a hulking 4x4 are interesting (to me anyway).

The fact the Caterham has to keep on the tarmac and the Bowler can rag about on the grass and hook itself on the edge of the tarmac make it fun to watch. I'd love a chance to drive either car in that setting.

We took one of the 4wd cars to Oulton a while back, and at the chicane we pretty much only had two wheels on the white lines - almost straight lining it.

On one of the in-laps a Caterham followed us around, I don't know if he was trying to learn the lines or whether he just wasn't paying attention, but I bet his dentist had a hell of a job after listening to it bang and bounce off the kerbs

Anyway, if you're spending that sort of money on a Land Rover(ish), I'll have this one:

Would be fair, a range rover compared to a bowler is about the same level of technology/power upgrade.

Its not a Range Rover, its not even a land rover. Its a space frame that uses lights from a Range Rover.
Its like down badging a car to make it look slower than its.

The Bowlers do actually use quite a lot of the LR drivetrain (well, depending on your exact model + spec, you can have one with almost nothing if you wish), although admittedly most of it is modified for strength.

VERY modified.
I could never claim my kit was a ford (sierra or focus) just beacuse it has quite a few parts from one.

Applying the same logic the above race is acctually Range Rover Vs Metro! lol

That'll depend on which circuit you go on. Obviously the range rover will win out on the off road routes and forest route but I would expect the 'catering van' to do better on the handling route and the hill routes.

Probably about the same amount of Beetle that's left in mine. However, as soon as you look at it you can see that it's Beetle-derived.
