Merc engine cuts at 4400rpm...

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a problem with my Merc.
It revs up ok, but when it gets to about 4400rpm, the ignition cuts, like it's hitting a rev limiter.
I'm stumped, I've replaced virtually everything on the ignition, and I'm running out of ideas.
I need to get it sorted by tomorrow, or I'll be taking my Merc lorry round Blyton on Friday!!

Cheers Frank.

Sounds like the cam position sensor. Does it crank longer than normal before firing. Also is cam tining correct? Or if belt driven the tension correct

Sorry, should have said, it's a 1982 2.8 straight 6, with Bosch electronic distributor ignition.
So it hasn't got a cam sensor, or anything like that, it's only 1 step away from points ignition.

Fuel pump? struggling to cope with higher fuel delivery? restriction in the fuel line?

Just a few ideas - might be rubbish!

No it's definitely ignition, as I've had the timing strobe on it, and the light starts cutting/pulsing when the engine hits 4400rpm.

Does it have a mechanical rev limiter type rotor arm? If so, glue it so it can't move.
Is there constant power to the +ve of the coil and pulsed to the -ve side?

Nope,
I've swapped the rotor, it made no difference.
I've checked the power to the coil, that's fine.
The spark is perfect.

It looks like the distributor is buggered, if the 1 off my spare engine isn't any good, it looks like I'll be looking for passenger rides on Friday

Agreed. So, we need a timing light and a box of matches then?

Well, it's not looking too promising, I've just come in, while getting the timing set up, the starter has died, and I think the over-complicated fuel pump relay has spat it's dummy out again.

I'm going to have tomorrow on it, maybe into the night again, if I can't sort it, I'll come Friday morning and try to blag as many passenger rides as I can.

I think I'm going to have to spend some serious time on it this winter...

I'll be over tonight, I just won't have a car
It's just too much work for today, along with the stuff I've got to do for the chippy, and the fair, before I leave.

Edit: I wonder if Richard will let me run the lorry...

That's a shame, especially after all the work you've put in to organise it. I can't see you having any problem blagging rides though.

Does it have vac advance fitted? If so disconnect it & see if that stops it, it may be that as the baseplate hits a particular position it's opening a break in the wiring? Otherwise if this is the Bosch distributor with the little ignition amp attached to the side of the dizzy they were notorious for giving problems (the amp I mean)

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

After spending the day thinking about it, I think the Merc needs an ignition upgrade...

...the question is, what do I go for? Megajolt? Nodiz? Or, another?
