Possibly buying a locost
I'm looking at a locust for sale locally, and I don't know what chassis it is.
The chap doesn't seem to know a great deal about it.
I'm basically after a little bit of locost knowledge, so I know the basics of what I'm looking at.
The car looks reasonably straight and supposedly runs very well.
It is MK2 escort based and It has a 7/11 1600cc cross flow engine with webber carb and 4 branch manifold.
Standard 4 speed gearbox
7/11 brakes
Spax adjustable coilovers all round.
The car is being sold as a track car but after speaking to the chap he reluctantly said it has been road registered in the past
But that the previous owner took the number plate to his new locust.
Sorry to be a pain but my final question:- if the car has been registered in the past but there is no evidence of this, can I put it through a road
legal test and get it road registered again?
Also , any rough suggestions on what it's worth (not road registered).

That would depend on the your local laws.
Was it tagged or stamped with an ID#?
Can you reach the previous owner to consult with him regarding how he was able to get it registered?

Assuming you're in the uk?
Then if the prev owner has ringed his new car with the details from this one you have No alternative than start from scratch with new IVA test etc

Well assuming there is no chassis plate etc. if I try to road register it, it will be like taking a new build to get road checked surely?
Why do you suggest walking away?
The current owner said it was registered before but the previous owner( a friends father) took the reg to his newer locost,
Assumingly to avoid Road registering the new one.
As I've said already I'm really new to all this, but really like the idea of a cheap kit car.

Most definitely. Unless you just want a track car or he only wants a few hundred quid for it.
You will have to take it through IVA= £450 + £90 for a retest and around £200 for registration.

Its all about price it wants to be cheap because it will cost you to iva etc as said before and you will want to upgrade a few things could do with
some pics do the sums and go ahead

Ok thanks for that info regarding the IVA.
Providing the car runs fine and is all serviceable, what would a rough estimation of value be if I could get it through the IVA from the spec I have
given?
Just trying to work out how much I'd be paying to buy it and put it on the road, to see if it is worth doing!?

If it was built some years ago (likely) then it may take a fair bit of faff and cash to get it through the iva. Hence the need for pics to assess what
may need doing.
I suspect you could easily spend more than what the car is worth.

I understand that I could spend a small fortune to get it through the Iva, however the car has been on the road before and supposedly is all
present.
The owner believes the car to be 10years old!
What makes the Iva so difficult to get through? (Genuine question)
It has all lights working etc

Is it a LocOst or LocUst ? the locust is a plywood body on a ladder chassis and although they can be made to look good they would not handle as well
as a proper space framed car.

Download the manual, everything you need to know in there. It is possible, but it depends how handy you are

Something else to consider is for the "basic" IVA, which is less testing than a "normal" IVA, you need to show evidence of the
car being built up, so unless the seller can supply pictures of the car during its build you may face the prospect of having to strip it down to its
individual parts so that you can then photo it as you put it back together to provide a set of build photos.
At the worst, if you got it for a low price you could always use the parts for a build using a new locost chassis.

In the past, I'm pretty sure that people who have bought cars like this that have been illegally stripped of their ID have managed to get the
original plates and docs back for the car. Obviously this would seriously wee off the guy who ringed it onto his new car illegally, and get them in a
whole lot of shit.

Its not really any different to what i am doing at the moment.
Mine had never been on the road though, it was just an old hillclimber. But i want to put it on the road.

Would said car be for sale on eBay for £1200?
I'm pretty sure people would have a look at it for you if they are near by, I've found everyone to be very helpful.
IMHO £1200 is super cheap for what you are getting, I think you'd struggle to get even close to buying the parts you'd need to self build
at that price.
Plus if it's the black one it looks to have a few pieces of Westfield bodywork fitted like the front and rear wings and nose cone, I have to say
I prefer the contours of the Westfield wings.
Not too sure what's going on at the back end though...... I'd like to see more pics of that setup. It looks like the rear panel curves up
and over.
Do the right thing, right, first time!
If only it was that simple!

if it was on the road 10+ years ago it may have gone through before the sva test was introduced. this radically increased the standards required to
make a car road legal. this was then revised (and made harder still with iva). without someone having a look you could end up having to spend a
fortune to get on the road and redo thinks like welding in seat belt mountings.

If it is the £1200 one on eBay, just from the photos there's loads of un-radiused edges, needs front indicators moved out further (400mm from
widest point at rear iirc) seats, seat belts, exhaust cover. Need a different steering wheel for the IVA too.
I would be more interested in the chassis construction (seen too many bird poo welds over the years) and any damage.
One reason for ringing a car is an accident, owner builds a new one and sells the old car off cheap (less the VIN) to then be repaired as a track car
etc etc.
That's not saying this is the case here but I would get someone local to come with you or have a look and if any doubts walk away. It may be a
diamond in the rough and it's cheap!
