recommendation - type9 - service

Seeking an answer among the great and the good,..

Please can some one recommend somewhere to get my type9 serviced and also any simple upgrades/mods that are worth doing while I have it out of the car for winter?

It is attached to a zetec and fitted in a fury

Many thanks in advance,....

By serviced do you mean refreshing with bearings and seals etc
Try Olton transmissions in shirley bham, theyre very reasonable - although the workshop is organised chaos
Ask for Dell
While out i would replace the gearbox mount and check prop ujs
I couldnt believe how soggy my engine and box mounts were compared with new ones

Thanks for the recommendation, yes, I am thinking that it needs looked at it has a definite whine on 1/3/5th so I am thinking it might be a bearing,... not something that I know enough about to have a go,

thanks again

how about a long first gear ?

there are a few kits for this now - much cheaper than a whole new gear set
and these are often available as whole exchange boxes

BGH is the obvious choice and easy to deal with, but there are a few others around now aswell

Thanks for all the input, I shall follow up the options of a long 1st, anyone got any advice on "how long"??

I know I am sat next to the box, but I would like it to be quieter and last longer,.. so a service/exchange/rebuild it is

thank you again

1st gear is very low on std. type 9's so its often not much more than a parking gear on cars as lightweight as ours, a slightly higher gearing just closes the gap to 2nd a little and makes it a bit more useful without the expense of a full close ratio box

get a gear calc program and see what the different ratios would do for your car, that way you can compare your engine rev's for any given gear and road speed with your current setup to help you make the judgment
(I quite like this one: http://locost7.info/gearcalc.php)

as a rough rule guide a stock 4 cyl type 9 has a 3.65 1st gear - most long 1st kits are around 2.98 (the V6 boxes are 3.36)
so 3.65/2.98 = 1.22 (i.e. a 22% higher gear) - so your top speed in 1st would be that much higher

or looking at it another way:
with the 3.65 1st its a 2532 rpm rev drop when you change from 1st to 2nd
with the 2.98 1st its a 1864 rpm rev drop when you change from 1st to 2nd
(all assuming a 1.97 ratio in 2nd)
so the longer 1st should make it easier to keep your engine in the good bit of its power band

Try Roger at roger Bayliss Transmissions in Cradley Heath Birmingham. He has always done our gearbox work and normally turns stuff round in 48 to 72 hours. He is pretty reasonable on standard rebuilds and never had a problem with any of his work.

ah, yes point taken on 1st, currently I can hit 60 in 1st so I am guessing that I am in the right ballpark for the kit

thanks again,

Would you mind pointing me towards where these gear-kits are available from, please?

60 in 1st with stock type 9 - you must have a very tall diff ratio...

either that you've got huge rear wheels or an engine that rev's to 11k rpm

now there's a thought,.. it rev's to 7500.

maybe it has a long 1st already,... could save a few quid??

thanks again

^^ we could probably work it out if you know your tyre size and either the diff ratio
if you don't know the diff ratio we could probably work that out from something like you engine rpm at 60mph in 4th (as 4th is normally 1:1) - and if we know which type of axle it narrows down the options

but then again I might be easier to just count the teeth when the box is opened up anyway

I don't have the data, the rears are 195x50x15's and it's an IRS, with a sierra diff. As you say when it comes out I shall check all the ratios in the box,...

thanks again for all your help

I have a BGH long first box in my car with 195/50/15 tyres and a 3 .62 Sierra diff, it reaches 40mph in first at around 7 ,000 RPM . One of the best mods I've done to the car

Thinking that if that is the case then I have either mistakenly remembered something .... time to dig out the video and see what it was actually doing and in what gear,....

All the suggestions are noted, any other thoughts or recommendations would be well received,

thanks again,.... (now where did I leave that video )

>>> Found the video and it is doing 45 in 1st,... so memory playing tricks,... <<<<

45mph in 1st at a max 7500rpm, with 195/50R15's..... that doesn't sound bad at all
so there is still a good chance you've already got long 1st or maybe the V6 box ratios

either that or you've got the 3.14 diff (the one that's like rocking horse poo that all the BEC and V8's want)
but if you had a 3.14 diff then you'd only be doing 2790rpm at 60mph in 4th - good for cruising, not so good for track days etc....

to put it in context - if your car had the bog std. 4 cyl driveline with 3.65 1st and 3.92 diff then with your tyre size you'd be on the rev limiter at 35mph

thanks for that,. I think that I need to measure input and output turns etc,.. When I have the box out, I'll check the diff too.

It was never a question that I asked when I bought the car, or the box for that matter,... oh so naive

I'll check the video that I recorded and see what I can glean, perhaps I can work it backwards to get approx ratios,..?

live and learn,.. the only way
