red top batteries, lay them keep them carged or flat over winter?

Hi all.
As above really.my last one lasted years without much attention, and was abused throughout the build and only charged and used as a booster pack really for a long time before it died. Now the cars being layed up for a while and I had a new one last spring what do you folks do?

charge it, and leave it disconnected.

don't store any batteries discharged
(unless they are new lead acid dry charge ones, but then they are not really batteries 'till activated)
