advice and help pls

hi to all
I am new to the site and looking for some advice . at the moment I am running a fireblade 893cc engine in my stylus but looking to go for a car engine . I like the bike engine but not the rattle's from the backlash and the fact it get so hot in town . not only that have just taken on a new stylus/fury chasse model which I had bought for parts for my stylus but now thinking of a total rebuild for it but I am a bit of a numpty when it comes to car engine's . I have been told that a ford puma 1.7 is a good choice but it is front wheel drive how do I go about the conversion as I have never done anything like this before. any help would be appreciated.

regards ian

I'd consider a silver or blacktop zetec in 1.8 or 2.0l derivative if going CEC, because it mates nicely to a Ford Type 9 gearbox, sierra rear diff etc. - it's a very well trodden path.

Other options are Ford Duratec engine, or if you fancy a complete package then MX5 is always an option.

I'd second the MX5 option, it's the idiot proof one (so it's the one I've chosen!). And they're ridiculously cheap, a couple of hundred max for engine and box as a guide. Or if you're good on Ebay, get an MOT failure complete car and dispose of the extra bits.

"Fireblade 893cc engine in my stylus", that's a track car by any other description.

The Puma engine is great, I have one in my J15. It was developed by Yamaha for Ford as their light weight car engine offering (called Sigma) and has been for the last 20years in it's current form is called the Eco-boost. It can be mated to type 9 gearboxes. I have a pal who has one mated to a 6 speed Caterham sequential box. I don't know how he did it but it can be found out.
My 1.7 Sigma was Dyno'd at 155bhp recently and that is with a factory ecu (re-chipped).

I have both BEC (Megabusa) and CEC (Sylva J15) and it is horses for courses. Q1 do you go on a track? if not you have the wrong car not the wrong engine.

engine

hi all
thanks for the reply's I built my stylus with a bike engine as I don't know a lot about modern car engine's so did the easy thing for me at the time . since then wished I had taken the time to start with a car engine as I do not race or have not done a track day as yet so its just road use for me and the fun of building it but would like to know how more as I feel I am able to sort it with what I have learnt now . just taken on a second stylus that I got for some body parts for mine but now thinking of a total rebuild with a car engine for the second so at the moment it's striping it down sorting the chasse and in the meantime getting all info on how to go about fitting a car engine ..thanks to all for your reply's

If you want to do the 1.7 Puma Zetec SE (AKA Sigma) engine have a look at my Anglia build blog (link in sig below). Also search for Jenko on here for more info including how to get the best out of the vct system easily.

Not the easiest engine to install RWD, you will need -

Special bell housing (not a standard type 9 bolt patern), plenty of places stock them - shawspeed, rwd motorsport, westfirld, caterhan, Tiger etc. This will then need either a clutch arms and release bearing (long capri version) or a hydraulic set up.
The biggest pain if the spigot bearing - only ford engine to not have a standard sized one - this will need either mechining out or the gearbox input shaft (type 9 or MT75) mturniong down. The 1.6 version is OK in this respect.
The coil pack sits on a water manifold on the back of the engine, you may have bulkhead clearance issues, shawspeed do a low profile replacement.
the good bit is that with 42mm bike throttle bodies (GSXR or I have used Triump tripple RS x2) (or Jenvey direct to heads if you have deep pockets) and a decent exhaust it will make 150hp all day. Add HD rod bolts, HD valve springs and a cam (shawspeed SS4 seems to be popular) it will make 175-180hp and rev to 8k+.
As mentioned above the engine has variable valve control - this can be controlled using a separate box (search VCT controller), controlled by the ECU (omex 710 is what I am using), or in a honda VTEC with mode (as per Jenko) with the more normal Omex 600, Emerald or MS.
Other stiff will be radiator, mounts, cooling pipes, possibly sump but that is wide but not too bad etc. but these are common to any engine swap.

The 1.6 version is easier in terms of no spigot bearing messing and no VCT but not as powerful, that said Chester Sports Cars got 143hp out of a stock 1.6 with just bike carbs, nodiz ecu and an exhaust.

You may want to look at your diff ratio as well, probably quite tall to take into acount the lack of bike secondary cog.

As others have said Zetec is easier and a stock type 9 can probably hand it, durectec possible but has a lot of the issues with the Puma (bell housing etc.), S2000 is the daddy b ut is quite tall but come with a "free" 6 speed gearbox so possibly similar in price to a Duratec with HD Type 9 .

For bang for buck I would gowith a ST170, HD type 9 from BGH/1st Motion/SPc etc. with a Chester bike carb set up - around the 200hp mark but very drivable. For something that feels like a big bike engine the Zetec SE gets pretty close especially with the rod bolts and valve springs. But if you have deep pockets and it will fit the S2000 takes some beating.

Sorry for the long post but hope it helps.
