Noise from an engine (Pug 207)

I'm looking to buy a Pug 207 for my wife, and we found a fairly nice one that I had a look at yesterday. It drove ok once it had warmed up, apart from a whining noise from the engine. It became apparent at around 1500 RPM, and increased in pitch all the way to the red line. It didn't really get louder, just higher.

The dealer said it was air induction, but if I 'blipped' the throttle I didn't hear an additional 'gulp' noise that I've picked up on other cars with noisy air induction. It also didn't disappear when I released the throttle, it just wound down as the engine revs dropped. I reckon it was either the alternator, power steering or air con pump.

I've already dismissed the car due to a misaligned front wing catching on the door, but am I on the right track with the sound diagnosis?

And does anyone know of a 207 or 308 for sale?

An over tight cam belt will also make a similar noise.

As above,or the aux belt is old and gone shiny.

Heard a few 207's making this noise, Never had a look but must admit it did sound like an overtight cam belt

They have a few known problems and well worth a search

To be honest, the searches for this issue has thrown up a fair few other common issues, including one very common oil leak that requires head work!! I think we're going to switch to the 308, seems to be a much better car.
