RS2000 Alloy Bellhousing to Xflow Questions

Had a good search but cannot find any info for my questions so here goes;

1, Do I need to fit a sandwich plate/dirt shield?

2, I am using a standard pressed steel rear bowl sump (with extra baffles), therefore there is nowhere to attach the two lower bellhousing bolts, are the upper six bolts enough?

I'll try and answer

Yes it is fine to use just the top bolts

It is a good idea to run the dirt shield plate, but I have run without plenty of times on competition stuff

One issue you my not have thought of is the bell housing has provision for left and right hand starters and no provision for a clutch cable support. You have to provide a clutch cable support in the centre of the starter hole you are not using. You can make something up or by something specific. (On RS2000 clutch support is part of the sump.)

Thanks for that. Yes. I did know about the clutch cable and have manufactured a plate out of 5mm steel which picks up the redundant starter holes.

Has anyone tried to manufacture a bracket to pick up the bottom bellhousing mounting points to the sump or similar?

You really don't need the lower supports, in fact if you fit a shortened sump then you will not be able to use them . My car has been on the road for nearly ten years with no problems

Had an RS2000 bellhousing on a x-flow for many years.

I fitted the sandwich plate simply because I had one but it needed modifying because the starter is at a different angle to a cast iron bellhousing. Mine was fitted in 3 pieces and worked fine.

Never seen a cross flow sump that uses the 2 bottom holes. Only seen them used to bolt the plate onto.

One word of advice. make sure you have the correct RS2000 clutch lever. the standard Type 9 one is too wide at the cable end and slightly the wrong shape at the pivot end and as a result fouls inside the bellhousing. See link below for photo of the shape. I got mine from a scrappy for a couple of quid.

Without this you will damage your clutch and bellhousing.

Great advice, thanks for all your help.

I am sure I once saw a 1300 sump which had a plate which picked up the bottom bellhousing holes, but then again I may have dreamt it. anyhow advice taken and I am going to ignore them.
I have the correct narrow release arm - thanks.

The starter mounting position can also differ between 2 versions of Ford RWD cast-iron bell-housings. I've just discovered this whilst assembling a T9 Sierra box to a silvertop. Tried to use the x-flow plate, based on the view that all Ford RWD bell-housings have the same engine-mating profile.

Well, the old Capri bell-housing definitely ain't the same as the T9 version. There are many similarities, but the starter motor position is deffo 6 - 10mm further round, and lower, on the T9.

So I'll adopt your 3-piece solution.
