Wiring Clarification.

This seems to mark the change from the fun bit, to the bureaucratic ar5ing.

Can I cable tie wire runs (within convoluted tubing) straight to chassis rails, or do I need to involve cable tie bases?

Yes, you can tie direct to the chassis. If you do use cable tie bases, the sticky pads on then aren't deemed good enough so you have to pop rivet them on. Spacing for loom securing isn't specified in the manual but most stick to whats specified for brake line at <300mm

Cheers, I thought that'd be the case, but didn't want to chance it.

They have actually added wiring to the manual, but as with everything, it's clear as mud.

quote:
All electrical cables/wires must be free from chaffing and secured at intervals of at least every 300mm unless contained in a secure hollow component. (see note 4)

Note 4: In the case of Motor Caravans this dimension can be extended to 400mm providing the wiring is held securely

I might have got it the wrong way around and it's brake pipe clip spacing thats not specified.

That could be read as you aren't allowed (for example) to secure them every 250mm, which seems wrong. It should be something along the lines of 'the space between securings must be no more than 300mm'

TVR used to cable tie everything directly to th chassis-tubes.

drilling holes into tubular chassis rails for fitting bases will weaken the chassis and speeden corrosion

On a practical level, the inspector will look at the wiring and, if he's not sure, he will waggle it around to see if it could rub against anything. He will be especially concerned if it could rub against fuel or brake lines, or if the insulation could rub off on something and cause a short-circuit.

He will also look much harder if the wiring loom is scruffy and/or untidy...
