Advise on new laptop/tablet please
Things move on with technology, my SWMBO wants to upgrade her lenenvo laptop to something faster, neater and smaller.
Currently she has:
USB ports for printer, backup hard drive, mouse etc.
plugs into seperate screen
Support for excel
Ideally she would like a tablet type solution with a keyboard that can be separated.
Our printer is WiFI enabled, so could lose the USB requirement
Free backup to the cloud would remove the local box, it's only for photos
Support for spread sheets
Must is retain the big screen, uses a D type plug
Happy with Windows or Apple, do not really want Linux type stuff.
So what's the Locost recommendation, not looking at a Low Cost solution as this will last 5 years before the next upgrade.

I think it'll be Microsoft surface for tablet with removable keyboard (most tablets will struggle to print to most printers in my experience,
Samsung will only print to Samsung printers. Apps are available for most printers, but I've not had any luck myself yet)
Surface will print to anything as its windows based, but wouldn't work with external monitors I don't think
I've got a samsung tablet which is great for internet and Facebook, but I wouldn't want to use it all day for much else. DEFINITELY
wouldn't want to use use touch screen for excel. It would be infuriating
Think a new laptop is what she's really after. And an HDMI to VGA/dvi adapter

We have a selection of Lenovo stuff at work. .. there are some ok convertibles, but for full lap top and touch screen functionality there's
always a compromise. Especially so if she's chacing performance too. I'd suggest a full blown pc where the screen folds all the way back
to convert it to a tablet. Good luck and happy hunting

I purchased a laptop from PC Specialist online. If you go to their website you can spec your own build. I went for a no-name chassis with high spec
internals. You can decide which area is more important, for example you can get i7 processor and cut back on Hard drive. If you are not going to be
using for high end games cut back on the graphics card. Cut back on sound card as most laptops have rubbishy sound and have to go through external
system anyway.
Going through a company that builds the system to your needs means your not paying as big a price for a high street named brand.
On another note, my son had the Asus Transformer and swears it is brilliant. Half the price of my laptop and is more portable as the screen splits
from keyboard.

Use a MS surface pro, I think it's really good, others may not. Worth a look at the surface 3 as well. Still very personal thing worth getting
one to play with if you can.

If everything works on the present laptop, but slowly, why not try what I have just done for my wife's laptop.
Changed the hard drive for a - Crucial CT500MX200SSD1 MX200 500GB.
Cloned the old drive and fired it up.
I would not have believed the performance change if anyone told me.
It boots so fast that we can boot up, surf and shutdown again in less time than it took to boot on it's old drive.
So good I have ordered one for my laptop.

Video output is no problem as cable converters from HDMI or USB are easy enough to buy very cheaply search ebay or amazon, USB port are pretty
essential.
You haven't mentioned an optical drive internal BlueRay/DVD drives increase the size and weight of the unit enormously. These days with net
connectivity, SD and USB memory it is surprisingly easy to live without a CD/DVD/BlueRay.
Don't get hung up on CPU power, and don't spend a fortune on big brand in many ways it is better a neat little Asus Notebook than a big
heavy top end Compaq, HP or Dell Laptop.
Also check the hard drive spec very carefully a lot of the latest generation Notebooks are using solid state hard drives soldered to the motherboard.

I have a 10.5" samsung tab s and am very pleased with it. Bought a bluetooth keyboard and case on Ebay for £12 and it works a treat. It is sim
free LTE, has sd card port. Will connect using adapters to a monitor or smart tele. It's like a small laptop that can be a tablet and a phone.

Some also use the royalty-free 'display port' although if its display port plus (DP+) as most are you can convert that to hdmi with a £2
adapter of ebay.

Not convinced that is the case if the current tating on the drivrs label is to believed. Maybe i habe oldish ssd but is listed as needing more amps
than the hd it repkaved, the laptop fan runs more frequently for longerwhich is annyoing.
Supposedly sshd give similat performance to ssd but are cheaper for the same capacity and draw less current.
Computer is noticeably faster.
