Starter motor problem
I've got a 1600 xflow - 691 block. When I try to start it it just clicks. After a few attempts it'll turn over. If I stop the engine and
try to start it again the same thing happens - just clicks and after a few attempts turns over.
Could it be the motor brushes. If so, which starter motor was fitted to the standard 1600 xflow. I know it's a pre-engaged unit but I
don't know anything else about the starter motor.
Any help would be appreciated.

More than likely the starter solenoid. It is separate to the actual starter motor being pre engaged. Follow the wiring back from the starter and you
will find it.

Does it stop working straight away or after a couple of days?
There is a situation I commonly call browning, my 4age actually suffers with the same problem but getting parts for that is a b!tch.
Essentially the motor keeps stopping at the point. The high current required to crank the car causes a brown spot on the bush or the contact. The
brown carbon insulates the contact, causing a higher current draw to start. It perpetuates until you get to your situation.
THe constant try, try, try broom is as it breaks through a starts. Another way to solve this if it gets really bad is hitting the starter with a
spanner while trying to crank the car.
To fix it cheaply, take off the starter and send it to a specialist for reconditioning, or buy a new one.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention that the vehicle has a battery isolator switch. Could that have a bearing on the problem.

It shouldn't no. Mine has one fitted too, as well as a pre engaged starter motor. As long as the connections are good, it shouldn't be an
issue.

We assume the battery is in good cobition and of sufficient caoavity.
Wr assume the cable connections from battery to solenoid and starter are clean and cables are of sufficient amperage.
We assume bolts holding starter to engine block are making good electrical contact and that earth cable from engine block to chasis and chasis to
battery makr good elevtricall contact.
Connecting another battery e.g. like jump starting, make asny differrence?
Connect starter cable fom battery negative to engine - any difference?
Connect starter cable to solenoid from battery positive so as to bypass isolator - any differrnce.
As before but put positive on to starter, this tests starter itself and is scary as it will produce a big sprk, do symptoms remain?
