Midlana wheel size

Hello,

I've posted this on the Midlana forum but thought I'd also put it here for the guys in the UK.

I've see the team dynamics 1.2 on the Demon Tweeks sale.The 15 x 7 inch are available in a 4 x 100 with offsets of 35, 38, 40, 42, 45. I will email them to ask if I can order different offsets for the front and rear but its likely I'll have to get a set of four the same. If so does anyone have any thoughts on the best offset to to choose?

For the same price I can get them in 13x7 with an offset of 35. Reading the forum and the book I know the reasons for avoiding 13 inch wheels but looking on here and other forums its the recommended size for Caterhams and other kit cars. The 13 inch wheels are also a different shape which I also prefer and lighter again. I already know they will only fit 1.6 brakes but that's no problem as my engine will only have 125bhp to start with.

My Puma engine/box donor came on 195/50/45 tyres and I was considering using the standard clocks. Does anyone know of a good online calculator where I can check the rolling radius of the donor and how it compares to Midlana. I'd also like similar to work out which tyres id need to get on 13s or 15s to suit the Midlana rolling radius.

I've got a calculator app on my android phone, simply called tire calculator.

I plan on using the focus dash from an rs or an st on mine. Having thought about this I think the pulse can be doctored like they do with becs to suit any wheel combo.

using a formula I found online ive calculated a 195/50/15 to have a diameter of 611mm which is 24 inches and within the spec (23.5 F/25R) given in the book. Using another calculator I've found that 205/60/13 will give the same rolling radius as the 15 with a few different sizes coming within 1% difference. My research has shown lots of people saying that 13s are cheaper than 15s but in the 205/60 size they are £100!!!

Interesting about altering the signal. What are your plans reference wheels and tyres?

I'm using the dash from the Alfa 166 donor on mine and will be having to make up a suitable wee box to generate the roadspeed signal. At this early(!) stage, I've done little by way of calculations, but will probably aim to use an ABS ring on one of the rear wheels then take it from there, or possibly just pick up on the inner CV bolt heads. Historically, I do all this sort of thing with CMOS logic type designs, but might consider using a PIC or similar for this job as there is the potential for having to make it adjustable over a very wide range. Much easier in software.

Don't hold your breath...but do watch this space as this is a job I need to sort eventually so I will come up with something you can probably use for your own cars.

If you can let me know what signal the dash requires and what sort of rolling radius you are aiming at that would help. Also, if your setup includes an ABS ring & pickup or similar.


...unless of course there is an off the shelf solution that will work, in which case, I might well be lazy.

My late night research has shown that the 205/60/13 gives the same radius as the donors original 195/50/15. It seems to be common on Caterhams to have that size on the rear and a 185/60/13 on the front. Failing that I could go 195/50/15 all round on the 15s. R888s are a similar price weather i go 13s or 15s but you can get R1R on 15s for around half the price of r888s.

Also the 13s are only available in a maximum offset of 35Et. If I'm understanding it correctly then I can't make them 40et for the front and using them would give a 10mm wider front track as they are each 5mm further out. Thoughts on that? Likewise if I got four 15s at et 40 the rear would be narrowed by 10mm but at least then I could use spacers to make them wider.

An extra 10mm on overall front track won't make much difference. As long as you can make the back at least as wide it won't look odd, and anyway, a wider front track than rear isn't a bad thing in itself.

Alternatively, you could just reduce the length of the wishbones to accommodate it then tweak the steering arm length as well. Might upset bump steer a bit but there's a good chance you can dial it out.

Yeah I guess your right about the 10mm and I can always put spacers on the rear to also bring them wider. Didn't think of that doh!

Looking on the mx5 forum and these fit under 1.8 brakes in 13x7 et35 so I'm not limiting my options there

Good wheel choice!

I just ordered a set for my locost - 17x9 ET23 on the rear and 16x7 ET35 front, you can order mixed combinations, i had some on my Celica GT4 years ago and that was mixed offset.
