Zetec turbo questions

Hi all,I am currently getting all the bits together to carry out a turbo convention on a 2.0l zetec,I'm changing from bike carbs to injection at the same time so require a new ecu, which ecu would be the best to go for & work with the turbo well? Also I'm looking for a tuning company after the work has been completed so would like recommendation,I am in West Sussex so close by would be ideal.

I am a driving god!..........sort of

I'm planning mine based on the rs focus. Standard plastic inlet and ford 6myd ecu from the focus.

Plenty upgrades around to get this up to 450 bhp and beyond (£££££)

Lots of options depending on price.
I have an Emerald K6 ecu, stock 2.0 plastic inlet and a modded focus exhaust manifold to suit a T3 turbo. A stock engine will be limited to about 15psi boost. forged pistons and rods are really required along with uprated valve springs for higher boost levels. The crank and block are good for 450bhp. more than that and you should use a cgi block and billet crank.
Turbo type depends on what your after doing, but TD04, T3(a bit old) GT28, GT30,GTX28, GTX30. You just need one that will move enough air for the power your after.

Have had zetec turbo power in my Westfield for over 3 years now and probably done around 12,000 miles in that time.
Std engine, decomp plate, charge-cooler, 11/12 psi boost max.

I went for MegaSquirt 3 ECU which controls fuel and ignition, as well as controlling turbo boost via a solenoid valve. I have been happy with it. Bailey Performance are supposed to be MegaSquirt tuning gods. I self-tuned mine (auto-tune is great) and it hasn't gone bang yet! I'm always tweaking the map.
Stock T3 turbo from a cossie bolted to an escort RS turbo exhaust manifold with zetec exhaust flange welded on.

Inlet manifold/plenum is doing my head in at the minute....
I did have a Fiesta RS1800i alloy plenum which carries the charge air over the top of the engine.
Recently changed that to a GBS plenum as it looks a much neater set up and allowed me to drastically simplify & reduce the boost hoses. However that just failed spectacularly last week and appears to be made from tin foil.

So now I'm looking for inlet options.
Anyone got pictures of a 7 with the std plastic inlet manifold? I understand that the Mk1 Focus RS used a standard plastic 1.8/2.0 inlet manifold from a regular Focus. But doing that I'm concerned that the charge pipe is going to be sticking out the bonnet again. Might have clearance issues with steering column too.
GTI-R plenum would be good but it's a lot of work/machining to get it fitted. Maybe I'll go back to the alloy Fiesta inlet?

Ran this set up for 3 years...

Ran the GBS plenum for 8 weeks...

Before it did this...

Yes the rs uses the standard blacktop 2.0 / 1.8 mani. It then has a plastic adapter to go from a bt mani to a st throttle body. It then has a big elbow and this will stick out of the bonnet.

. . . . And that GBS manifold looks agricultural but without the strength!!

Holly crap.

I brought earlier on this week a pulsar plenum which I will be putting on my NA 4age. Hopefully ill charge it one day. . . .

I am still designing something i am happy with but it looks like ill be using the top lid part and custom making a backing plate. Luckily im handy with solidworks ao can send a design out.

Teerible that they borrowed from the parta bin for a new car and terrible in the routing of the air.

To have a 90deg bend before the butterfly which is then followed by a 180 deg bend is not the ideal.

Most of the car is a parts bin special. Yes from a race engine point of view it's pee poor but it was only designed to make 220bhp .

You should have a look at what a tidy low miles Mk1 Rs is making. And it's till just a rusty old focus.

The parts bin special does mean it's a cheap way of making a 250 bhp turbo Zetec, engine management an' all.

Looking back at that pic I think what it is that surprised me was that I have never seen the back of a mk1 RS engine. I am a massive Ford fan and have worked on several mk1 RS focuses but only from an electronics point of view.

I have poured over these at car shows and just never noticed it.

Its true what you say, parts bin specials are good and keep the costs down. I just thought the RS was a bit more special!
