kidderminster IVA Test center!!

Hi all

Has anyone recently taken there kit car to kidderminster center ? (BEC)

i have been there 4 times and failed on emissions, but have been to 3 MoT certified garages and passed the emission on the same regulations as the iva! i had a test on the 30th april at 11.15 and failed but taken it to the mot at 8.30am that same morning to test and passed with flying colours?

so my question is anyone else failed emissions there with a bec engine car?

I have sent proof of all the paperwork to the technical officer and his going to
look into it!

Plus the next test is the 19th june !!!!!!!!!! Absolutely joke! the car has been finished for
the last 3 months!! i just want to go out and drive.

It’s been to dyno twice to make sure it’s set up and it been tested 8 different times at 3 MOT
stations

Sounds strange to me!

Do you have any proof from the garage emissions tests to show at the IVA that it's been tested elsewhere and passed?

Is he definitely testing to the same standards? Only thing I can think of is he is testing to a stricter set of emissions standards than the MOT garages.

I've been to Kidderminster and passed OK, but it was a Rover K series Caterham and it was a few years ago....The tester I had was Keith who was very fair and friendly with me.

Does seem a little odd, however:
- Yes the garage may have done the non-cat test, so the IVA test is stricter?
- You may now have a small leak in the exhaust drawing in air (unlucky if this was the case);
- Your CAT was not hot enough, I've seen this make the difference between a pass and fail, it needs to be really hot to work;
- Something else has changed?

Do you have any copies of your tests (IVA and previous) to give some clues?

Cheers

Ian

Keith is no longer testing unfortunately and from what I gather the new guy is no where near as friendly.

I have showed them that i have 8 print outs of the test and he said that could be any car!!
so after kit car show it’s going back to all 3 garages and i will record a video and set it to the
technical officer.....

We have tested the car on the same standards

co 0.20 or less
hc 200 or less
lambda 0.97-1.03

At fast idle 2500-3000rpm

I evan fitted a throttle stop so i could only get throttle to 2600rpm
That was at all garages and iva

still a fail

It was tested at the same standards as i had taken the standards from the iva to the MOT station and
it was tested useinh the info!
as i had failed on 4 occasions with emissions so i made sure it was tested so i don’t keep wasting £90

Yes does seem a little odd, not to mention expensive and frustrating!

I found this regarding the calibration of equipment, this is MOT stations, but there must, or should be a similar regime for IVA stations?

Do you know what the test results were at the IVA, i.e. how far away from passing were you?

Speaking as someone who has a chunk of experience in measuring gases, I would insist on proof of calibration. As they can't do this, I would ask the MOT garages for their calibration data to pass onto the technical officer.

the test on the 30th was

co 0.00
hc 26
lam 1.109.

it’s the lambda that’s high but when at the center at 8.30 am on 30th
it was

co 0.00
hc 49
lam 0.99

The garage i taken it to on the morning of test was calibrated
10-09-17

the other garage was a brand new snap on machine

Call DVSA, option 1 and ask to speak to Mark Viccars in the IVA Technical department and go through it with him.

E-mailing them usually entails a very long waiting time as they get hundreds of e-mails each day.

Mark is very fair and will do what he can to resolve the issue.

The fact they have not calibrated the machine recently says it all! At the Southampton test center where i went, the calibration cert was attached to the machine and gave the same readout as the MOT test center that it was previously tested and setup on.

Sounds like the probe they’re using has a tiny leak pulling air in as it’s reading co and hc pretty closely to the other machines . My sun dga machine did the same a few yrs ago
