Locost Chassis with MX5 front Uprights

Hi,
I thought this would be easy in terms of just buying parts. I have enough work to do so I don't want to spend time fabricating parts. There must part that fit?
I have an escort steering rack from Rally Designs, front wishbones from Fabmetal (Alan) and want to use the MX5 front upright. The problem I have is matching the connecting components, track rods have a 14mm x2mm pitch and don't fit the MX5 track rod ends. The Cortina rod ends fit the thread but the taper doesn't fit the Upright. If that makes sense?

I would attach a photo if I can to explain but seems not user friendly?? I've donated so I thought I would have more options.

MX5 TREs are M12 x 1.25 - are you using rack extensions at all? You should be able to get hold of them.

If it is only the taper angle that's the issue (I mean the Cortina rod end will fit safely otherwise), then why not just ream the upright to suit the Cortina angle?

ETA: double check the car at full droop and full lock when it gets assembled, especially if you're using mark 1 uprights. Fouling of the steering rack and the front of the lower wishbone is very common.

I would use extensions, that's the easy bit, the tapour ends aren't right.

I'm using MK2.5 uprights.

I think that they use BMW rod ends in the Voodoo plans.

Most, if not all, Sevenesque cars using MX5 uprights I've come across use the E28 BMW 7 series track road end (M14 x 1.5, which is very different to what you'd find on Ford based suspension). Its taper is the correct angle and fits fine in mark 1 uprights. However, in my experience, as the mark 2/2.5 MX5 upright has a much thicker upper taper fitting, the BMW TREs that I had didn't have enough thread to fit the nyloc on properly. I was heading down the custom route to get something that fitted as I couldn't find an off the shelf part (and my wishbones had been made to accept the BMW TRE).

Unless there's a good reason not to that I'm not aware of, I can't see any reason why you just wouldn't ream the taper in the upright to suit the Cortina part to fit the upper wishbone to the upright. Then fit steering rack extenders to take the M14 x 2 ends down to M12 x 1.25 to then fit the MX5 TRE into the steering arm on the upright.

OK, I'll have a look at those but I think I'll use the Mazda TRE's. I have photos of the Locost Mazda's and the track rod is adjusted to what looks like about 5 threads left so it means that I'll have to do something with the front track. There's up to 70mm total to work with as I have measured a car that had a track of 1540mm, I have to keep under 1610mm
The lower ball joint Cortina taper is a bit small and goes in too far.
I'm trying to buy parts that fit and not have custom made, if and when I have crash damage, I want the ability to buy parts rather than make them. 😉

I went to the lathe man to have some TRE's made up. They were a Mazda TRE to an escort rod, and were made to the length I needed. He didn't charge me any more for the exact design I wanted.

Here's an example on his Ebay store;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182037303712

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181082511479

The lower ball joint on the uprights is the standard Mazda with the one threaded bolt going vertically and the nut and bolt going horizontally. The top ball joint on the uprights is the BMW one mentioned previously. But that is following the Saturn plans.

That's great, thanks for the info. I need the shortest extensions as possible so I'll just cad some up to have made.

The only thing I need at the moment is a upper ball joint so I'll start another thread.

Cheers!!
