zetec from scratch

Well after a few months of been busy at work i'm back on with the build. I'm trying to decide on an engine choice but funds are limited so I'm thinking of going for a zetec installation.

I've had a quick look through previous posts and am thinking a pre 95 1.8 is probably best. But

1: I'd like to fit throttle bodies, which ones (cheap) should i get and will they need modifing. I'm thinking i can manufacture my own manifold.

2: Can i use the gear box/clutch that comes with the engine? If not what is the easiest gearbox/clutch to fit.

3: I take it i can use a coil pack thingy out of an older escort to sort out the timing until i can afford a megajolt am i right?

4: Can i get bodywork for a book chassis that is high enough to clear the engine. If so which company supplies it.

5: Is there anything i've not thought of?

So basically any advice at this stage would be very gratefully recieved. Primary concern is budget followed by ease of installation.

Cheers

Matt

Also - Sorry i forgot! Has anyone sucessfully modified the standard injection system so that it'll fit under the bonnet.

Cheers
Matt

Get one from an Escort as the sump is shallower and the water pump spins the right way.

The prob with the injection is more one of the ecu than the manifold..The ecu requires all sorts of inputs that make it hard work.
The locost option would be the 1.8l escort engine from a manual car that way you get the right water pump the shallower sump and the lighter fly wheel ..

If you get one that was atached to an mtx75 box it should have the 240mm clutch with 1" 23 spline drive plate which will mate up to an mt 75 gearbox with just a 19mm spacer on the thrust bearing.

If you can make the manifold then bike carbs wouldnt be very expensive.

You still need the coil pack what ever ..The cheapest root would be an esc ecu from an old fiesta/escort but that will hold back the power out put.

Mejagolts not that dear I recomend getting it ready made and tested.Paulf did mine and charged me less than the sum of all the parts due to min order quantitys. Top bloke who even took the time to demo the software.... You then need an edis 4 from an old ford the coil pack /vr sensor will come on the engine ..

Prices for a 1.8 circa £50

Make sure you get a manual engine as you will have to pay extra for the flywheel and the vr housing ,its also different and wont line up with the manual flywheel..

The standard gearbox for the zetec is of no use to a book chassis...Mines an mt75 box from the latter sierras/granadas..I like the box but most on here would use the type 9...Pay around £30....

just my 2p worth

Hi,

When I first build my car I ran a 1.8 Escort 105 zetec on a pair of 45's and ESC ignition module.

It ran like CRAP.

I tried a few different ESC modules. Off different models to see if they had different maps.

STILL CRAP.

Bought an Emerald ECU and fitted it, still running on the same 45's and the base map suppied by Dave Walker.

Total transformation!

I'm now running a 2ltr zetec with the 45's converted for use as throttle bodies.

Did the mapping myself.(with the help of a Lambda probe and a passenger whilst on a reccie run for boscombe down sprint and also trying to learn the circuit !!)
