Laying a lawn
Does anyone know anything about laying a lawn? We've got a guy doing ours at the moment and were wondering if it looks like he's doing a
good job or if he's a bit of a cowboy?

whe they did ours, they laid it end to end in long strips.
did he roller it first with a heavy roller, if not it will sink in time, ours did.

They didn't roller it but they did walk it all down and it was only a fairly thin layer of new top soil so that should be ok.
My dad's just a bit paranoid because this is the 3rd time we've had the lawn done and they've made a mess of it both times before,
but then my dad does like to worry 
Wasn't sure about laying it in strips or going round like he has, I guess we just have to hope he knows what he's doing!

Turf is normally laid with all the joints being off set, it helps the grass bond so you don't get load of big gaps.

If you don't like the way someone else is doing it, you know what the answer is. You don't roll it till it's been laid and
settled and don't forget to water it.

Yeah I did suggest to my dad that we had a go at it ourselves but he said he'd prefer the peace of mind of getting someone else to do it. Then
he starts worrying that they're doing it wrong...
I think I'll just slip something into his coffee to make him relax a bit

It dosen't really matter how it is laid it can be fixed afterwards with a mixture of coarse sand, peaty compost, lawn fertiliser and grass
seed.
1st for a weed free lawn ideally don't turff it seed it.
2nd don't mow it too closely
3rd mow it little but often without a grass box.
4th feed in the spring with feed & weed
5th feed it in the fall
6th Spot weed and burn off moss with lawn sand.
7th Overs seed thin patches with grass seed and peat in spring.
8th Don't try to roll out bumps -- fill the hollows gradually with a mixture of coarse sand and peat and grass seed with a little lawn
fertiliser mixed in.
9th With new lawn keep it watered also applies to any lawn after cutting or applying lawn treatments.

Don't chemically de-weed a lawn that is less than 6 months old... so it says on my weeding stuff.

I would have thought it should be laid in straight lines, then trimmed to shape...

He's done that so you don't get a narrow strip near the edge, good practise. You can fill in the middle in any pattern and any small gaps
filled with peat and soil. the grass will grow into the gaps. What happens to it after it's laid is the important bit. If you don't water
it it's doomed anyway.

All finished and it looks pretty decent, he did fill in the middle in straight lines. It pi**ed it down last night so watering shouldn't be a
problem

Bottom right hand corner of picture 1 shows gradually rotated turf's to fit the edge of the lawn. When finished it looks like he's relaid
them form straight lines again - maybe?
Not done a bad job - prefer a Locost (seeded) lawn though - what you've got there, thats the Cateringvan's of the lawn world!

lawn away to be cut".
