I guess it's kinda logical just to keep dirt from falling in there, shoot ive had a few socks in the exaust of my 13b for as long as the engine has been out of the donor, keeps the mice at bay...

If it was me though I would have hunted the wayward oil cap down, even if I had to reach into the engine bay, or worse crawl under the car and try and reach it

What kind of damage could a sock really do other than get stuck in the valvetrain?

at the worst get stuck in there keep a valve or 2 open and then wang bang thank you mam, head job on the way !

it could at worst get chopped up in to pieces and then get sucked up to the oil pump and block the filter head etc

Did something similar myself!
Put an old shirt sleeve in the inlet manifold to stop crap getting in and, you've guessed it, bolted the carb on.
The engine started first time, but ran a bit rough. Then I remembered the shirt
I had nightmares about bent valves, rocker sahfts, knackered pistons - the lot.
I took the rocker cover off, and a few of the valves were still open, so off came its head.
Lots of bits of shirt were removed and I couldn't find any problems!
I put it all together again, and hey presto!
10000 trouble free miles later, still going strong.
