Hi give this guy a phone.

You want shielded twisted pair.

He's called Harry Donner:

(01733) 571809

Not sure if they deliver though?

Cheers,

Murray

To connect to the sender? Audio cable is sheilded and will take the signal ok. Should be able to buy that from an Electronics shop for a few pence per metre.

Or if you have a nice IT bloke at work - try the shielded CAT 5 cable :-)

Flak Monkey is correct speaker wire is good - as long as it's shielded!

Shielding is pretty simple - its just aluminium foil.. so i suppose in true locost fashion you could make your own shielded stuff?

Just get some aluminium foil (from the wife, missus, sainsburys) wrap it round the wire - overlapping. Then go over that with black tape ;-)

The problem with CAT5 is that it's not flexible enough for use reliable use in a car and after a while it will break. I use Maplin's cheap microphone cable. It's designed to be flexed and is shielded.

No not normally.

I was referring to cable used to make up Phono leads and the like.

I like the microphone cable idea too.

Dont forget with shielded cable you should ground one end but not the other. Otherwise you can create a feedback loop that could cause more interferance than you would get with unshielded cable.

The sender has 2 wires poping out the top. Should i ground one of those wires to the chassis then off to the speedo?

Not exactly. The two wires will run in the center and a shield conductor around them. Three conductors total. The center two will connect to the speedo or engine computer. Its the shield that needs to be grounded on only one end.

The shielding will only work if its grounded. Being only a few feet grounding both end will make no difference. It would however be bad practice.

The cat 5 is likely to be a problem if its in sun light as the sheath is easily damaged by sunlight.

Microphone cable, and if you need connections, microphone plugs, are great. Everything is shielded and the plugs have a connection for the shielding, which then shields the plug as well.

I have used these for the crank sensor connections on engines before with success.

All from Maplin
