Steering rack

I have just purchased a new MK2 Escort steering rack for the Avon. I tried to fit it last night but something is not right. The centres of the mounting on the rack are 275mm and the centres of the Avon mounts are 257mm. I phoned Tiger who were very helpfull and measured a chassis (which was the same as mine) and tried on a Escort rack which fitted fine.

I have phoned the motor factors, who have checked the part number and confirm that I have Escort MK2 Rack.

Can anyone help with measurements from their car/parts.

Ian

Thanks Viper, that looks like the rack I have been given is wrong and the Tiger right. That should be slightly easier to sort out!

If you look at the drawing on page 67 in the tiger book the hole centers of the rack mountains are 275mm, my escort steering rack has mounting hole centers of 260mm, are there two different types of rack?

Billywhizz-I agree the book drawings do say 275mm centres, but as Viper says the Tiger built chassis are at 260mm. Viper did you get your rack from Tiger or elsewhere?

I bought my rack from CAS (central auto spares) £35.00 +£10.00 surcharge..
It is a mk2 they have sold you? you can tell if its a mk 1 if it has a long input shaft and the threads are different on the track rods

Just an update, I have had a replacement rack delivered which fits fine. Its a bit odd as it is the same part number on the rack? So the Avon was right all along.

Ye of little faith!
