gearbox and diff cleaning

Hi can any one help me what is the best way to clean off all the oil and grime from an alloy gearbox and diff housing? Is there a special chemical to make it look as good as new?

Cillit Bang does not.

3 Hours Saturday, in the snow, using Swarfega degreaser neat, Cillit Bang, white spirit & tooth brushes. Gear box does look well now.

Adsa sell a big flat watertight storage box(and cheap toothbrushes), big enough for a type 9 bellhousing, which did catch all the dung (unaffected by the chemicals I used) , £7.50 well spent. Some sort of hand pumped spraying device is useful. Note: you cannot reuse a Cillt Bang sprayer.

Wish I had known about the oven cleaner.

Muscle - but as already mentioned be careful of the fumes. They are very nasty.

Used it to clean up engine and sump pan – fantastic compared to other more expensive chemical cleaners.

White lightning....not the cheap strong cider but the stuff any bike shops stock...amazing just spray on a rinse off later with all the crud etc.....It kind of breaks down the grease to leave just the dirt which is then completely dry and just need rinsing off with water or indeed a blast from a compressor! Oli.
