BEC Donors?
Just out of interest really as I have no real thought of buying, but one day I want to do a BEC so I'm always trying to gather information.
Our local freebie rag has a ZZR1100 for sale described as "G" reg 27K nice condition etc £1,450.
Would that make a good BEC donor?
I'm thinking "G" reg is emission free and you could probably break the spares like the faring, forks, wheels, frame, lights etc to
track day victims and get the basic engine cost down to around £1,000. Or would it be cheaper just to buy a ZZR motor from one of the bike engine
specialists.
As I said, just out of interest really.
I used to be apathetic but now I just don't care.

Ashley bought a crashed or stolen recovered ZZR and sold most of the spares on ebay. It is possible to break even / make a profit.
You also have a major advantage over buying an engine from a breakers / dealer, in that you can ride it first. My first ZZR engine didn't have
a second gear. I didn't find out until I was ready to go to MOT / SVA. Passed though with that engine!
However my second ZZR engine only cost me £250 from good ole ebay. So they are available very cheaply. In fact a pair of ZZR engines just went on
ebay for £320, about two weeks ago. (Seriously tempted, but what would I do with four of the buggers.) (Make two twin engined cars or course!)
If you do buy the bike, you can get the entire wiring loom, rad, oil cooler, expansion tank, carbs, exhaust cans, fuel pump, clutch lever, clocks etc.
A package which cost me £750.

Interesting that you could do it a number of ways but I wasn't aware you could get much of a bike engine for under £1,000.
If you could sell off all the bits and use lots of the ancillaries it might make it worth it especially if the bike is mint rather than a scrapper.
Alot easier than scrapping a car and much more SWMBO friendly.
The R1 engines do look cheap but with them all being newer engines you would have all the hassle of CAT's and emmisions at SVA. The fact it was
a pre-emmisions engine with a V5 I also thought would be worth something.
And as you say I could always ride it for a bit while I drive the pinto option (which incidentally is back in for SVA on Thursday) except for the fact
I don't have a bike licence

I've just broken a ZZR1100. I'm yet to start selling the bits off but I ought to end up with a fairly cheap engine by the end of it.
Plus I know I have everything I need to make it run.
Mine was £1000 for a 1994 bike with about 17k on the clock, so you might be able to do a bit better than the one you quoted, but it's probably
worth having a look at. If it's in absolutely mint condition of course then all the bits you don't need are probably worth a bit more
when you sell them.

I bought both of my ZX10's as complete bikes, sold loads of the stuff on ebay & got good money back for it - I don't think
there's a better way of making sure you've got a good 'un, & being certain of having all the bits you need.
