Start with say a G10 Farecla compound then I have found 3M's Finesse to be the ideal finishing compound to polish it up.

flat and polish as you would paint
1200 to 2000 wet & dry dependent how bad scratches are preferably polish up with a mop with some g10 compound,
if you havnt got a mop get plenty of tins of elbow grease

Is it a deep scratch or a light surface scratch? A deep scratch wont really 'polish' out.
