from the title i was expecting something dodgy to do with a man in a kilt or similar but that base jumping glide suit man is quite cool.

I guess you've probably got to look quite hard to find a suitable launch site!

Not something you can really practise or 'work up to' either!

really cool jumping, you need around 500+ jumps to have enough experience to do that sort of thing.
it looks like a popular base jump site in southern france.

scary sh1t though, you dont have a reserve on base rigs

don't suppose it would be worth it! if your main chute didn't open you'd probably have hit the ground before you thought about pulling the reserve!

thats exactly why they dont have them. you make sure you pack the main properly, base rigs are also different as they are designed to open instantly as opposed to a normal canopy that opens in 1 - 3 seconds. downside is it bloody hurts like hell when they open that fast.

The guy who pioneered wing suits is a guy called jari kusoma take a look here clicky pretty cool stuff.
Base jumping has been around for years but the wing suit adds a new dimenison and a longer flight.
they also use the suits for normal skydiving and a typical freefall lasts a few minutes instead of 45 - 60 seconds. vertical speed can drop to 45Mph as opposed to 120mph. one nutter planned to jump from a plane in new zealand with a wingsuit and land on a mountain side on the snow without pulling his parachute. he figured he could bring himself to land at the correct angle and skid to a stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not sure if he did and bear in mind your forward speed can be over 100mph head first into the side of a mountain

also seen a guy i think it was jari dock onto a jumper in freefall with a wingsuit whilts under canopy.

translation..... guy jumps out of plane with wing suit happily flying back to earth.
another guy jumps out of plane and deploys parachute.... not a normal canopy butyt one specially designed and about the size of a postage stamp to give him a forward speed of 60+mph.

the guy under canopy lands onto the wingsuit jumper whilst in mid air.

they separate and he than has to land the postage size parachute. they pulled it off and it was very impressive to see.
anyway better get back to doing some work this afternoon.

It predates this vid by quite a long time!

I remember in a lecture at uni on early flight being shown a film of a guy jumping off the first level of the eiffel tower (pre wright bothers, etc) wearing what was basically a blanket strapped to his wrists and ankles.

It, erm, didn't work. Camera followed him all the way down to a sickening crunch into the ground.

It did look like he came to quite a painful stop mid air.

Used to jump a PC called a Starlight 20 odd years ago that opened in about 1/2 second (yes half a second ) every time I jumped I had bruises on my inner thighs, First time I jumped a square I though it had misfunctioned cos it took a couple or three seconds to open . Someone had the Starlight blow up a couple of weeks after I had finished with it.

lol last summer we were jumping off a 25-30 foot harbour wall in france

we were also jumping off this rock face bordering a mountain stream that was fooking freezing we were litterally climbing up what was like a cliff but halfway up a mountain and throwing ourselves off into this stream / river it was great we were there in swimming shorts then these guys came down from further up the mountain in wet suits with built in boots and stuff and were doing the same as us for a while and then went to get changed because they were too cold rofl
